For many Indian vehicle owners, FASTag has become a routine part of highway travel. But changing the bank that issued a FASTag could previously mean closing the existing tag and getting a new physical one. This has now been made simpler with OneTag, a new FASTag portability service introduced by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Launched in September 2026, OneTag allows eligible NETC FASTag users to switch their issuer bank while keeping the existing FASTag attached to their vehicle. The service is now available via the NHAI Rajmargyatra app.
What Is OneTag?
OneTag is intended to ease such FASTag bank switches. Instead of removing the existing FASTag and applying for another, eligible users can change to a different issuer while retaining the tag already installed on their vehicle.
On success, the existing FASTag ID and vehicle registration number are retained which means the same physical tag can continue to be used with the new tag issuer bank.
How Can You Switch Your FASTag Bank?
The portability service is available through the Rajmargyatra mobile app where users can:
- Log in to the Rajmargyatra app
- Enter vehicle registration number and determine if FASTag is eligible for portability
- Receive a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) from the current issuer bank
- Authorise the portability request
- Select a new FASTag issuer
- Complete customer verification and wallet onboarding with the new issuer
On success, the existing FASTag ID remains linked to the vehicle.
What Happens To Your Existing FASTag Balance?
Switching issuers does not mean the previous FASTag wallet simply disappears. NHAI state that the previous issuer will be closing the existing wallet and refunding the available balance after applicable adjustments to the user. As such, users should double check their wallet balance and any pending transactions prior to completing the switch.
There is a six-month cooling period before an interoperable FASTag can be ported again.
What Should Vehicle Owners Check?
Prior to switching, it is important to make sure your vehicle registration details and FASTag information are accurate. NHAI has been working with issuer banks to validate vehicle registration numbers associated with FASTags which underlines the importance of keeping FASTag and vehicle records correctly mapped.
Owners should also keep track of other routine requirements such as insurance, PUC, RC information and pending traffic violations. A regular challan check is a good way to flag any pending e-Challans and review available offence information prior to it becoming an unwelcome surprise.
Platforms such as MyMotor bring together a number of vehicle-related services including vehicle and RTO detail, RC information, insurance, PUC, FASTag and e-Challan services. This can be beneficial in ensuring that different aspects of vehicle ownership are maintained. The MyMotor app can also help vehicle owners check challan details and manage other important vehicle-related information conveniently from their phone.
A More Flexible FASTag System
OneTag makes a change to the process of switching FASTag issuers and eliminates the need to replace the physical tag in eligible cases. As digital vehicle and tolling systems continue to grow, it will be important to keep vehicle registration, FASTag and other records updated.
For owners, the principal change is simple: if your FASTag is eligible, changing the issuer bank no longer necessarily means changing the physical tag on your vehicle.
