Snappy Self Storage opened a new self storage Croydon facility on 10 July, at Land to the East of, Lambert's Pl, Croydon, CR0 2BR. The site offers 20ft drive up storage containers from £50 a week, with no deposit and no fixed contract term.
It's the company's first site in Croydon, adding to existing locations in Orpington, Bromley, Barking, and South London. The timing isn't a coincidence. Croydon is mid way through a large regeneration push, most visibly around the Whitgift and Centrale redevelopment and the ongoing investment near East Croydon station, and that kind of upheaval tends to generate a lot of short notice storage need, both for people renovating or moving house and for businesses working around building sites and disrupted premises.
What's Actually On Offer
Each unit is a 20ft container, 160 sq ft, ground floor, drive up. There's no lift, no corridor, no trolley run from a loading bay. You park, load or unload, and lock up. That matters more than it sounds for anyone moving a sofa, a fridge, or a pallet of stock, since it removes most of the friction that makes traditional storage annoying to actually use.
Access is 24 hours a day, every day of the year, through a personal digital gate code.
Billing runs on a four weekly cycle starting from the day belongings move in, not the day of booking, and there's no minimum term beyond the first week. A spokesperson for the company put it this way: "Most people searching for storage in Croydon are dealing with something on a deadline, a chain that's about to fall through, a renovation that starts Monday. We didn't want a deposit or a 12 month contract sitting in the way of that."
Who's Using It So Far
On the personal side, the early customers look a lot like what you'd expect from an active housing market: people bridging the gap between selling one place and completing on the next, people clearing a property before builders start so nothing gets damaged, downsizers who need somewhere to put things while they decide what to keep. There's also a smaller but steady stream of students at Croydon College and nearby universities storing belongings over the summer rather than hauling everything home and back.
Business use is more varied. Croydon has around 13,000 registered businesses, and the ones turning up so far include online sellers who need overflow space for stock without committing to a commercial lease, tradespeople storing tools and materials between jobs, and a couple of firms using containers as an archive for paper records they're required to keep but don't need in the office. Lorry and forklift access is available for larger deliveries, and businesses don't need to be on site for a pre arranged drop off.
Getting There
From central Croydon the drive is roughly 25 to 35 minutes via the A23 and A205 South Circular. It covers CR0 through CR8: central Croydon, South Croydon, Thornton Heath, Norbury, Purley, Coulsdon, Addiscombe, and New Addington, along with parts of neighbouring Sutton, Merton, Bromley, and Lewisham. It's further out than a facility in the town centre would be, but the trade off is a lower weekly rate than most central options, which is the point.
Pricing
Units start at £50 a week, which includes 24/7 CCTV, the gate code system, drive up access, and standard insurance on stored items. There's no deposit and no admin fee. Snappy Self Storage says introductory offers are available for new customers while capacity lasts, and that pricing stays flat from quote to move in, without the "from £X" figures that turn out to exclude half the things you actually need.
The Bigger Picture
Storage isn't a glamorous business, but Croydon's growth has made it a slightly more interesting one. A borough going through this much construction and turnover needs somewhere for things to sit in the meantime, whether that's a family's furniture during a six month renovation or a retailer's stock while their shop unit is being refitted. Snappy Self Storage is betting that being cheaper and further out beats being central and expensive, at least for the kind of storage most people actually need..
