Most WA participants compare Plan Management providers on exactly one thing: price. That's the first mistake, and it's an easy one to make since every provider's marketing leads with "NDIS funded" as if that settles the question. It doesn't. Here are the five mistakes we see most often at Distil Management, and what to check instead.
#MistakeFix1Comparing on price aloneFees are capped by the NDIA — compare service quality2Assuming "NDIS funded" means compliantConfirm they charge at or under the price limit3Not checking invoice turnaroundAsk for average processing time, in days4Ignoring provider flexibilityConfirm both registered and unregistered providers are supported5Forgetting fees reset each financial yearCheck the current-year price limit before signingMistake 1: Comparing Providers on Price AloneHere's the thing nobody selling Plan Management wants to lead with: the NDIS Plan Management cost in WA is fixed by the NDIA. For 2026–27, it's capped at $104.45 a month, and that number doesn't shift whether you're in Fremantle, Perth's northern suburbs, or Kalgoorlie. A provider charging less than that isn't a bargain — they're either charging correctly, or something's off with their invoicing.
So when two providers are quoting basically the same number, price was never the differentiator. Responsiveness, reporting quality, and how quickly they process claims are.
Mistake 2: Assuming "NDIS Funded" Means They're Playing by the Rules"Fully NDIS funded" sounds reassuring. It also tells you nothing about whether the provider is actually charging within the published limit. We've seen registered providers quote a separate establishment fee — a line item removed from the NDIS pricing schedule back in July 2025. If someone's still charging it, that's outside the rules, full stop.
Ask directly: "Do you charge at or under the current NDIA price limit, with no separate setup fee?" A provider that hesitates on that question is one to walk away from.
Mistake 3: Not Checking How Fast They Actually Pay InvoicesThis is the mistake that costs you relationships, not dollars. A slow Plan Manager doesn't just annoy you — it annoys your support workers, your allied health providers, your cleaner. Providers stop prioritising clients whose Plan Manager takes three weeks to pay.
Ask for a specific number: average days from invoice submission to payment. "We're quick" isn't an answer. "Two to three business days" is.
Mistake 4: Overlooking Provider FlexibilityThe whole appeal of Plan Management over NDIA-managed funding is that you can use registered and unregistered providers. Some participants pick a Plan Manager without checking this, then find out later their preferred support worker — someone unregistered, maybe a family friend with the right skills — can't be paid through that provider's system.
Confirm this upfront. It's the main reason people choose Plan Management at all, and it's worth checking rather than assuming.
Mistake 5: Forgetting the Numbers Change Every YearA quote a friend got in 2024 tells you nothing about 2026–27 pricing. The NDIA reviews price limits annually, usually each 1 July, and the figure moves. We still get calls from participants quoting an old rate at us, confused about why it doesn't match what we're telling them.
Always confirm the current financial year's price limit before signing with anyone — not what a provider's website said six months ago.
What This Means for Comparing Providers in PerthNone of these mistakes are really about money. They're about assuming Plan Management is a commodity where every provider is identical because the price is capped. It isn't. The cap just means the real comparison happens elsewhere — turnaround time, communication, and whether they actually understand your plan.
At Distil Management, we take as per our services a transparent approach: current-year pricing, no hidden setup fees, fast invoice turnaround, and support for both registered and unregistered providers. If you're comparing options in Perth or regional WA, ask us the same five questions above — we'd rather you ask than assume.
FAQIs a cheaper Plan Manager ever a red flag?
Sometimes. If a provider charges below the NDIA limit, check they're not cutting corners elsewhere — like slow invoice processing.
How do I check the current price limit?
Ask your Plan Manager directly, or check the NDIA's published Pricing Arrangements for the current financial year.
