PicoJool, a Palo Alto-based optical connectivity company, has raised USD 27.5 million in Series A funding to accelerate the commercialization of its high-speed laser products for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The round was led by Socratic Partners, with participation from Hudson River Trading, and brings the company's total funding to USD 39.5 million following a USD 12 million seed round previously led by Playground Global.
The Funding and Its Purpose
PicoJool intends to use the capital to expand its teams and facilities in both the United States and Taiwan. The company plans to grow its research and development, operations, sales, and marketing organizations as it works to qualify, manufacture, and support products for hyperscalers and data center operators. Early sampling of chip-level VCSEL products has already begun ahead of broader availability.
Al Yuen, founder and CEO of PicoJool, described the current phase of the company as focused squarely on execution following a key technical achievement. "Reaching 200G per lane proved that the performance is there. Our focus now is execution," Yuen said. "This funding allows us to expand our teams in the U.S. and Taiwan, qualify products with customers and move a complete portfolio from chip-level VCSELs and microVCSELs into AOC and NPO modules."
The Technology Behind the Company
PicoJool is developing Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser, or VCSEL, technology for use in optical connectivity products designed to serve the demands of large-scale AI systems. The company's portfolio includes high-speed VCSEL products at 100G and 200G, as well as lower-power microVCSEL configurations at 50G NRZ and 64G NRZ/PAM4.
The 200G VCSEL products exceed 37 gigahertz of bandwidth, and the portfolio includes quad 100G, quad 200G, and 32x50G NRZ microVCSEL configurations. These configurations are designed to give customers multiple paths to 1.6T connectivity, depending on their bandwidth, power, and system requirements. The company has also stated that its portfolio is designed to scale from 800G to 1.6T, 3.2T, and beyond.
The microVCSEL platform uses what the company describes as a massively parallel architecture to increase aggregate bandwidth while reducing the energy required to move each bit of data. PicoJool said it is seeing growing customer interest in its microVCSEL products, including a 50G NRZ configuration intended for optical compute interconnects, and 64G NRZ/PAM4 configurations for PCIe 6.0-based near-package optics applications.
The Market Problem PicoJool Is Addressing
AI clusters are placing mounting pressure on interconnect performance and data center power budgets. As the number of processors in AI systems grows and the volume of data moving between them increases, the demand for faster, more efficient optical connectivity has intensified. PicoJool is positioning its VCSEL-based approach as a way to address both the bandwidth and power constraints that hyperscale AI deployments face.
The June 2026 unveiling of PicoJool's 200G VCSEL and microVCSEL product family for scale-up AI data centers preceded the Series A announcement. The company is working with system companies and hyperscalers to define next-generation pluggable, near-package optics, and co-packaged optics solutions.
Manufacturing Partners and Production Readiness
PicoJool is working with WIN Semiconductor and other gallium arsenide foundries to ready its 200G VCSELs for production.
WIN Semiconductor has shipped more than one billion chips over the past decade, bringing high-volume manufacturing experience to the partnership as PicoJool prepares its products for qualification and production.
Investor Perspectives
Greg Waters, General Partner at Socratic Partners, framed the investment around the economics and scalability of VCSEL technology relative to the demands of AI infrastructure.
"Moving data efficiently dictates how quickly and economically AI scales," Waters said. "PicoJool combines a proven team with a unique approach that brings VCSEL technology's cost and manufacturing advantages to AI-scale bandwidth and power needs. They are poised to become a vital connectivity platform for next-generation data centers."
Pat Gelsinger, general partner at Playground Global, which led PicoJool's seed round and participated in the Series A, pointed to the company's combination of technical performance, systems expertise, and manufacturing capacity.
"The network is the AI, and connectivity is becoming one of the defining constraints on performance," Gelsinger said. "PicoJool brings together breakthrough VCSEL performance, deep systems expertise and a manufacturing base capable of supporting tremendous scale."
Company Background
PicoJool was founded by Al Yuen, whom the company describes as a photonics industry veteran. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and conducts research, development, and operations in both the United States and Taiwan.
Its stated focus is on developing optical chips and modules for high-bandwidth, low-cost connectivity in hyperscale AI data centers, spanning from the semiconductor level through the transceiver and system level.
