Almost everyone who walks into our clinic for laser hair removal asks the same first question: "How many sessions, and when will I be done?"
Fair question, and the honest answer is a range, not a number. Most people need somewhere between six and eight sessions. Some finish in five. Some need ten, or a top-up once a year. Anyone who quotes you a fixed number before looking at your skin and hair is guessing.
Here is what actually decides it.
Why one session is never enough
Laser targets the pigment in your hair. It heats the follicle and damages it so it grows back finer, or stops growing.
The catch is timing. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only works on hair that is in its active growth phase. On any given day, a good share of your hair is resting under the skin, invisible to you and to the laser. So each session catches one batch, and you come back a few weeks later for the next.
What changes your session count
The area. Underarms and upper lip tend to respond quickly. Legs and bikini line usually take longer, and the chin is often the slowest.
Your hair. Thick, dark hair gives the laser a clear target. Fine, light or grey hair doesn't, and results there are limited whatever machine is used.
Your hormones. If you have PCOS or a thyroid issue, new hair can keep appearing. That doesn't mean the treatment failed. It means the hair follicles are being stimulated from the inside, and you may need maintenance sessions to keep up. We usually suggest getting the underlying cause looked at alongside the laser.
Your skin tone. This affects the settings and which laser is safest for you, which brings us to the next point.
Spacing your sessions
A rough guide most patients follow:
AreaGap between sessionsFace (upper lip, chin, sideburns)Every 4 to 6 weeksUnderarms, bikiniEvery 6 to 8 weeksArms, legs, backEvery 8 to 10 weeks
Don't expect a bare patch after the first visit. Around two weeks in, the treated hair starts shedding, which can look like it's growing back. Give it a couple of sessions before judging. By the third visit, most people notice they are shaving far less often.
Which laser is best for hair removal?
We get asked this all the time, and the answer is that no single laser is best for everyone. The right one depends on your skin tone, hair type and the area being treated. That's why we use more than one.
Candela GentleMax Pro has two wavelengths in a single machine, Alexandrite and Nd:YAG, and a cooling burst that protects the skin's surface with every pulse. The Nd:YAG setting is what we lean on for deeper skin tones, where safety matters most. It's also strong on thicker, stubborn hair.
Soprano is a diode laser that works differently. Instead of firing single, sharp pulses, the handpiece keeps moving over the skin and warms the follicle gradually. Most patients find it noticeably more comfortable, which matters if you have a low pain tolerance or a large area like full legs to cover.
Having both lets your dermatologist match the machine to you, and not the other way round. When you're comparing clinics, ask what device they use, whether it's the genuine branded machine, and who is actually holding the handpiece.
Is it safe for Indian skin?
Yes, provided the settings are right. Most Indian skin has enough melanin that a wrong setting can cause burns, dark patches or blistering, and this is where cheap packages and salon-style setups go wrong. A doctor should assess your skin before the first session and adjust the settings as you tan or your skin changes through the year.
What a session is actually like
First visit. A short consultation about your skin, medications and medical history, then a test patch if needed.
The treatment. The area is shaved and cleaned, and you'll wear protective goggles. It feels like a quick, warm snap against the skin. Upper lip takes a few minutes, full legs around an hour.
Straight after. Mild redness and small raised bumps around each follicle are normal. They usually settle within a day.
Before and after: the basics
Before your session
- Shave the area the day before. Don't wax, thread or pluck for at least four weeks, because the laser needs the root in place.
- Stay out of strong sun and avoid tanning treatments for two to four weeks. This one matters more in Delhi summers than most people expect.
- Tell the doctor about any medications or creams you use, especially anything that makes skin sun-sensitive.
After your session
- Use sunscreen on the treated area every day.
- Skip hot showers, saunas and heavy workouts for a day or two.
- Don't scratch, pick or scrub the area.
- No waxing or threading until your course is complete.
Quick answers
Is it permanent? It's long-term reduction, not a guarantee of zero hair forever. Most people see a large drop in growth after a full course, and some fine hair may return later, especially with hormonal changes.
Does it hurt? There is some discomfort, but modern cooling makes it manageable. Most patients describe it as a rubber-band snap.
Can I start in summer? Yes, as long as your skin isn't freshly tanned and you're careful about sun afterwards.
When will I see a difference? Usually after the second or third session.
