Korkia Moves into Powered Land for Data Centers, Targeting Finland, Sweden, UK and Chile

Korkia, the Helsinki-based renewable energy investor, is expanding its investment strategy to include powered land for data centers, citing growing pressure on power grids and surging demand for digital infrastructure as the drivers behind the move.

A New Investment Category Built on Existing Capabilities

The company defines powered land as sites where land and permitting for a data center have been secured or are being advanced, and where access to electricity and grid connection capacity are secured or clearly defined. Renewable energy generation and battery energy storage are often located nearby and integrated into the wider energy infrastructure.

Korkia is currently advancing powered land development projects in Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Chile, while continuing to assess opportunities across its other markets.

The company operates across nine markets in Europe, North America, and South America, supported by a team of 50 in-house professionals and more than 75 local development partners.

The expansion builds on Korkia's existing work as an investor in the energy transition. The company already holds a 15-gigawatt advanced portfolio spanning utility-scale solar, wind and battery energy storage assets, which it says provides the foundation needed to originate and advance powered land opportunities.

Power Access Identified as Central Constraint

Mikko Kantero, Executive Vice President for Portfolio Management and Growth at Korkia, pointed to grid access as the defining challenge for data center investment at present.

Speaking about the rationale behind the expanded focus, Kantero said that access to power is one of the key constraints for new data center investments, and that growing electricity demand is increasing pressure on power systems.

He described this situation as creating an investment opportunity, saying it allows the company to invest in renewable power, energy storage and supporting infrastructure that can help meet the needs of data centers while strengthening the wider energy system.

Korkia's stated aim is to help alleviate grid constraints by connecting data center demand with new renewable generation, battery energy storage and supporting grid infrastructure, rather than relying on existing grid capacity that is already under strain.

Integrating Land, Permitting and Generation Under One Platform

Kantero described Korkia's approach as bringing together multiple components through its platform and local partnerships. These components include land, permitting, grid access, renewable generation, and energy storage.

He said that combining these capabilities can give data center operators a clearer path to power while creating what he characterized as attractive new investment opportunities in energy transition infrastructure.

The company's existing renewable energy asset portfolio is central to this strategy. Korkia says it provides access to land, grid and permitting expertise through local partners, along with experience in renewable generation and storage, investment discipline and active portfolio management across several markets.

Company Background and Market Presence

Korkia was established in 2006 and is a privately owned company headquartered in Helsinki, Finland. It maintains additional offices in London, Milan and Santiago de Chile.

The company describes itself as a global investor accelerating the transition to renewable energy, developing utility-scale solar, wind and energy storage projects across its operating markets.

The powered land expansion represents a broadening of that remit, connecting the company's infrastructure investment experience with the specific demands of data center operators who require not just physical sites but guaranteed and substantial electricity supply.
