Search all five titles, but aim for the ones that pay and grow. Junior data analyst and reporting analyst roles require the same SQL, Excel, and Power BI that SkilloVilla's Data Analytics with Python track teaches live, and its placement support helps you get in front of the employers hiring for them.
Why does one job go by five names?
Because each company names the role after the team it sits in. A bank's operations team calls it MIS, a startup's growth team calls it data analyst, and a large services firm hires freshers as trainees first and gives them the full title later. The work underneath is close: pull numbers, check them, put them in a report, explain them.
That matters for your search. If you type only "data analyst" into a job portal, you miss every opening posted under the other four names, and some of those are the easiest to get as a fresher.

What each title means on the job
Data analyst traineeA training role, usually at a large company that hires freshers in batches. You learn the company's data and tools for a few months, then move into an analyst seat. It pays the least of the five, but the training and the title that follows make it a good first step.
MIS executiveMIS stands for management information system. The job is keeping a business's regular reports running: daily sales sheets, weekly stock positions, monthly summaries for managers. It is mostly Excel, and it is a common title: over 61,000 salaries are reported for it on AmbitionBox, second only to data analyst.
Junior data analystThe plainest entry point into analytics. You write SQL queries, clean data and build simple charts, with a senior analyst checking your work. Ads for it often say 0 years of experience, which makes it one of the best titles for a fresher to target.
Reporting analystClose to MIS, but with SQL and Power BI in place of hand-built sheets. You own a set of dashboards and keep them correct. It pays well for an early role because a broken report is noticed at once.
Data analystThe full title. It covers everything above plus one-off questions from managers, where you decide what data to pull and what it means. Freshers do get it, especially with a strong project.
Which title is worth taking first?
Any of them gets you started, but they do not grow at the same speed. AmbitionBox records how much the average salary for each title rose over the last two years:
- Data Analyst: 16%
- Reporting Analyst: 15%
- MIS Executive: 11%
- MIS Analyst: 5%
An MIS role is often the easiest door to open, and it is mostly Excel. Take it if it is the offer you have, then build SQL and Power BI on the job so that your next move is to a reporting or data analyst title.
What do all five ask for?
The same three skills keep coming back: SQL, Excel and a dashboard tool, usually Power BI. A fresher who can show all three in a project is qualified for every row in the table.
- SQL to pull data from a company database without waiting for someone else
- Excel for pivot tables, lookups and quick checks, which every team still uses
- Power BI to turn a table into a dashboard a manager can read
Python helps, and trainee roles list it, but it is rarely the thing that decides a first offer.
How do you read a job ad?
Read the skills list first and the title second. An ad titled "MIS executive" that asks for SQL and Power BI is really a reporting analyst job, and the pay often reflects that. An ad titled "data analyst" that asks only for Excel and typing speed is closer to data entry.
Three lines worth looking for:
- Who you report to. "Reports to the analytics lead" means you will learn from an analyst. "Reports to the operations manager" means you may be the only data person.
- The tools named. Specific tools, such as SQL Server or Power BI, show a team that already works this way.
- The word "dashboard". It usually means you will build, not just update, and that is the experience the next job asks for.
How should you apply?
- Search by title, not by company. Save a search for each of the five titles and check it daily.
- Apply in the first two days after a role is posted.
- Send one project with every application: a dashboard or a short analysis, linked at the top of your CV.
- Track what you send. Ten good applications a week beat fifty copied ones.
What should the project show?
One piece of work that uses all three skills. Take a public dataset, such as sales or delivery records, pull a slice of it with SQL, check and tidy it in Excel, and build a one-page Power BI dashboard that answers a single business question. Then write three lines: the question, what you found, and what you would do about it.
That one project answers most of what a first interview asks, and it gives the recruiter something to open before they call you.
Mistakes that keep freshers waiting
- Applying only to "data analyst" ads, and missing the other four titles
- Listing tools with no proof, such as "Power BI" on the CV with no dashboard to show
- Sending the same CV everywhere, when an MIS ad and a data analyst ad want different skills first
- Waiting for the perfect title instead of taking a good first role and moving up within a year
Where does SkilloVilla help?
SkilloVilla's Data Analytics with Python track teaches Excel, SQL, Power BI, statistics and Python in 20 weeks at about 2 hours a day, with live classes, 1:1 mentorship from working analysts, and real projects. It lists at ₹58,999, and the track page says no coding experience is needed to start.
At the end comes placement support with mock interview rounds. SkilloVilla names its hiring partners, including Accenture, Deloitte, Flipkart, Swiggy and Razorpay, and says its alumni earn 4 to 15 LPA, with a median package of 9.5 LPA. Its guide to data analyst fresher salaries goes deeper on first offers.
Frequently asked questions
Can a fresher get a data analyst job without experience?Yes. Junior data analyst and trainee roles are posted for 0 years of experience. A project you can show stands in for experience.
Is an MIS job a good start? It is a start. Plan to add SQL and Power BI within a year.
Do I need Python for a first data job?Not usually. Trainee roles list it, but SQL, Excel and Power BI come up in every title. Learn those first and add Python after.
Should I take a lower-paid title to get in?Often, yes. A year in an MIS or trainee role with SQL on the job makes the move to a data analyst title much easier than a year of searching.
