Wild Buffalo Return To Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park, which is located in Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most famous wildlife parks in India. Its attractions are the open grasslands, sal trees, and especially the tigers. Wild buffalo had also been inhabitants of this park a long time back, but the 1990s witnessed their disappearance.

According to the current scenario, the wild buffaloes, after more than thirty years’ disappearance, are now returning to the Kanha National Park. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), along with the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, has initiated a project for the reintroduction of these animals. This project will not only enhance the biodiversity of the park but also help regain its natural balance.

This is a huge conservation movement. Moreover, in the upcoming months, people who are willing to make Kanha Safari Booking may get lucky to witness wild buffalo in the park again.

Why Wild Buffalo Are Coming Back

Previously, wild buffalo inhabited a significant portion of Madhya Pradesh. However, their population decreased due to deforestation, unavailability of mating partners, and human presence. Their gradual disappearance from the state took place. To counter this, the government has devised a plan to transfer 50 wild buffalo from Kaziranga National Park and Manas Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam to Kanha National Park.

The plan has been authorized by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The transfer will take place in five installments, with ten buffalo being relocated at each time. This gradual process will ensure that the animals adapt to the new environment without any problems. The first batch of buffalo is likely to arrive at Kanha National Park in March.

What Scientists Found In Kanha

Before starting the project, scientists from the Wildlife Institute of India studied whether Kanha National Park could again support wild buffalo. Their study showed that Kanha has good weather, plants, and land for these animals.

The park’s meadows have enough grass, especially Citrus (Cytirus) grass, which wild buffalo like to eat. There are also many water sources and safe areas for them to live. The study confirmed that Kanha National Park can naturally support and help wild buffalo grow in number.

Importance Of Wild Buffalo In The Forest

Wild buffalo are very important for keeping the park’s grasslands healthy. They eat tall grasses and keep them short. This allows sunlight to reach the ground and helps new grass grow.

When wild buffalo graze, it also helps other animals like deer and antelope find food and space. Their dung adds nutrients to the soil, which helps plants grow better. Because of these reasons, wild buffalo help keep the forest balanced and strong.

Past Situation And Problems

In the 1980s, around 30 to 35 wild buffalo lived near Kanha National Park, mainly in the Balaghat district. The herds were usually led by female buffalo. But over time, they faced many problems like loss of breeding areas, weak genes, and shrinking forests.

Many young calves died early, and the remaining buffalo moved towards Chhattisgarh and Odisha in search of better living conditions. By the 1990s, wild buffalo had fully disappeared from Madhya Pradesh.

Future Plan And Visitor Experience

The forest department is creating a 150-hectare safe area called a “boma” in the Suphkhar Range of Kanha National Park. Here, officials will check the health and behavior of wild buffalo before letting them roam freely.

After the buffalo adjust, they will be released into the park’s grasslands. Forest staff and scientists will keep monitoring their growth and breeding. This project will help bring back buffalo and improve visitor experiences. People who make Kanha Safari Booking will see wild buffalo with tigers, barasingha, and other animals.
