Getting a new car is an exciting experience, however there are certain things that can be overlooked when getting everything sorted at the dealership. Doing the below will help avoid any future issues.
1. Check RC Details
Your Registration Certificate (RC) will show that the car is legally owned by you. When you receive your RC, check all the details match your invoice including your name, address, engine number, chassis number, fuel type and variant. If there are any typos it can cause issues when claiming for insurance in the future or reselling. If there are any issues, make sure to get the dealer or RTO to sort out the information as soon as possible. You can search your registration details using your vehicle number via the MyMotor. You can also confirm these via the government’s Parivahan portal.
2. Check your insurance details
Third party insurance is required, however most people will purchase a comprehensive policy at the showroom. Check that the dates on your insurance match, as well as the insured declared value, added extras and nominee details. Save a digital copy on your phone.
3. Check your FASTag
Most new cars will have a FASTag provided by your dealer. Make sure that it has been properly assigned to your vehicle number and there is a balance available. Make sure it is activated before your first time on the highway.
4. Take note of your PUC & Service Dates
Most new vehicles will have a pollution certificate for the first year. Make sure to take note of when it expires. Also note when your first free service is. Not getting this done can affect your warranty and performance of your car.
5. Do a Challan Check
Whenever you pass a signal, toll or speed zone with cameras, you will automatically receive an e-challan. This will go through to the mobile number attached to your RC. If this is incorrect you may not ever receive this. Make sure that your phone number is correct. Once a month you can do a challan check using your vehicle number. This will show you all the offences you have had, where and how much you have been fined. This will help you pay on time and avoid issues when renewing or reselling. If you drive in Rajasthan you can check your fines for this state using the echallan Rajasthan.
Get into a good habit
Although these aren’t a long process they will help avoid any issues with your documents, missing renewals and unexpected fines. Keep your RC details, insurance and receipts in a folder on your phone in digital format and enjoy your new car! To ease you can use Challan Check App.
