Shotguns come in a wide array of variants: pump-action guns, where one slides the front handle back and forth to reload; semi-automatic guns, which shoot and then reload on their own. There is, however, a special type to be encountered nowadays, less frequently the Bolt Action Shotgun 12 Gauge. More precisely, the 12-gauge model was a favorite for several years in North America.

This type of gun is less about shooting fast and more about strength, precision, and being simple to use and own. Many hunters and farmers relied on these dependable firearms for decades.

What is a Bolt Action Shotgun?

This means that in a bolt-action gun, the shooter has to cycle each shot manually by the movement of a handle, known as a bolt. The sequence involves three steps in this process: opening, which means lifting the bolt and pulling it back to remove the spent casing; closing, which means pushing the bolt forward, loading a new shell from the magazine into the barrel; and locking, which is simply pushing the handle down, sealing the barrel. Since the shooter has to go through these distinct motions for each shot, bolt action is slower compared with other varieties like pump or semi-automatic.

Why the Old 12 Gauge Was Popular

The bolt-action shotgun, especially in the powerful 12-gauge size, came to be very popular in America during a period spanning from about the 1930s to the 1970s. It filled an important role for a few simple reasons:

1. Great for Deer Hunting

Due to safety rules, which some people refer to as "shotgun-only zones," hunters couldn't use rifles to hunt big game such as deer in many areas. They had to use shotguns loaded with a single, solid piece of metal called a slug.

● Accuracy: The bolt-action design is very strong and holds the shell tightly in place. This strong hold makes the gun much more accurate than many other types of shotguns when firing slugs, especially at longer distances.

● Safety: The manual operation forces the hunter to be slow and careful, which is good when hunting.

2. Low Cost and High Strength

Compared to the more complicated pump guns and automatic guns of that era, the Old Bolt Action 12 Gauge was generally very inexpensive to manufacture and purchase.

● Reliable: The design has very few moving parts. That makes it very reliable and able to cope without much worry with being left in a truck or in some damp shed. Harder to jam: It is harder to jam compared with many other types of guns.

● Stronger Action: The simple mechanism of a locked bolt was also strong enough not to break under the pressure of powerful shells.
