Overview
Located on the foothills of the Himalayas in the tranquil city of Dehradun stands The Doon School, a hallmark of academic distinction. Founded in 1935 by Satish Ranjan Das, The Doon School was intended to be India’s version of Eton and Harrow, and to cultivate an “aristocracy of service.” The all-boys boarding school for ages 12-18 enrolls approximately 500 boys from various socioeconomic backgrounds in its halls each academic year. The motto, “Knowledge Our Light,” speaks to the school’s educational commitment to both intellectual and personal development.

History of The Doon School
The Doon School opened with 70 boys on the former site of the Forest Research Institute. The school was established as a means to develop leadership and social responsibility in boys capable of becoming leaders of India, and it has produced exemplary citizens in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra, writer Amitav Ghosh, actor Ali Fazal, and sculptor Anish Kapoor, to name a select few. The Doon School is renowned for producing not only leaders in governmental and social programs but as citizens across all platforms.
The Doon School Campus
The school has fully outfitted labs for chemistry, biology and physics in its small, thoughtfully laid-out campus. Equally, there are notable red brick and stone buildings for the Rajiv Gandhi Design and Technology Centre, a cutting-edge computer department and IT centre with 120 terminals, and the school's museums for physics and natural history as well. The Kilachand Library at the school has 18,000 titles of books and other materials. The school also has a cricket pitch, four tennis courts, two basketball courts, four squash courts, a 25-meter swimming pool, hockey, and soccer pitches. There are also table tennis, gymnastics, badminton and boxing facilities.
The Doon School Infrastructure
The 70-acre campus features beautiful architecture and landscapes. Academic, sports, and cultural spaces are pervaded with natural beauty, all spaces made to inspire. The school’s infrastructure has been carefully built to ultimately promote holistic development and ensure that students are capable of excelling on various levels.
The Doon School Academic Resources
In 2010, the Arts and Media School was developed as a 25,000 square foot building complete with a film studio, Apple Mac studio, and a wonderfully bright reading room. The Kilachand Library has recently opened its doors with WiFi, IT facilities, and all departmental collections. Science labs for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as a design and technology centre, are spaces for boys to be engaged creatively.

The Doon School Sports Facilities
Sports are a fundamental part of Doon's philosophy, and for this, we have enormous outdoor sports fields with a fully equipped 25 meter swimming pool, floodlit basketball and tennis courts, cricket nets, and a golf course within walking distance! Our indoor sports facilities consist of a gymnasium, squash courts, a multi-purpose sports hall for badminton and boxing, and a shooting range built in 2014.
The Doon School Arts and Culture Facilities
The Music School with practice rooms, a recital hall - for Hindustani Classical music and Western music - is a joy to be in. The Rose Bowl amphitheater was rebuilt in 2011 and is a superb space for plays, assemblies, and any type of performance because of the acoustics. Each of these unique spaces helps boys develop their creativity, as well as arts and culture in their lives.

The Doon School Residential and Counselling Facilities
Boarding houses, Central Dining Hall (CDH) dining spaces for boys living in houses are not only comforts for boys but also enjoyed by staff. Mess Committees and the CDH encourage formal feedback from boys. The Wellness Centre gives boys medical services, a dentist, physiotherapy, nutrition education, and counseling as well as access to the UK SEAL program model of counselling.
The Doon School Admission process
Admission to The Doon School is very competitive and limited only to classes VII and VIII. The Doon School aims to find boys with good character and academics, as well as demonstrated, meaningful talents in sport, music and leadership. The admission process starts with a written entrance exam covering English, Mathematics, and Reasoning. Following the entrance exam, shortlisted candidates go through an interview process. The admissions process normally opens in August, with exams occurring in November each year. Preparing for admission early is essential as the number of seats available is limited.

The Doon School Fees structure
The Doon School’s fees reflect the facilities and education provided. For the academic year 2025-26, the annual fee for Indian residents is approximately INR 12-14 lakhs, which covers tuition, boarding and meals. In addition to the annual fees, there is a one-time admission fee (approximately INR 2 lakhs), plus a refundable security deposit.
