The Mumbai Indians women's team won their second WPL title by defeating Delhi Capitals by 8 runs in the final. Once again, Delhi Capitals unfortunately lost in the final three times in a row. Earlier also Delhi Capitals had to face defeat in the finals of the last 2 editions as well. Delhi topped the points table after the league stages and qualified directly for the finals, but in the end, they lost.
MI players dominated the WPL 3
Mumbai Indians' Nat Sciver Brunt won the Orange Cap for her 523 runs in WPL 3, while her teammate Amelia Kerr won the Purple Cap for her 18 wickets. Apart from them, MI's Hayley Matthews also took the most 18 wickets in the season. Nat Sciver Brunt also won the Player of the Tournament award for her 523 runs and 12 wickets. This season, apart from Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Giants qualified for the playoffs, but they lost the eliminator match against champions Mumbai Indians. Last year's champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru failed to qualify for the playoffs this time. Smriti Mandhana & Co. won just 3 games out of 5 and finished fourth in the points table. For RCB, Ellyse Perry scored 372 runs and became the second-leading run scorer of the season, but apart from her, every player of RCB failed this season. RCB started their campaign well with two consecutive wins against Gujarat Giants and Delhi Capitals but following that, RCB suffered five consecutive defeats and was knocked out of the tournament.
At the same time, Deepti Sharma's UP Warriors finished at the bottom of the table with just 3 wins out of 8. This season, UP beat RCB in both encounters while they beat runner-ups Delhi Capitals once but despite this, the Team finished at the bottom. For UP-W, Charlie Henry scored the most 163 runs and Sophie Ecclestone took the 9 wickets but these performances couldn’t save the team from being a flop.
In the final, Delhi Capitals won the toss and decided to field first. Mumbai Indians batted first and scored 149 runs. MI had a bad start and lost 2 wickets in just 14 runs. But from here, Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver Brunt made a brilliant partnership of 89 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur scored 66 runs in 44 balls with the help of 9 fours and 2 sixes while Nat Sciver Brunt’s cricket score in the final match was 30 runs. For DC, Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and Shree Charani took 2-2 wickets respectively. In response, Delhi Capitals could only score 142 runs. They lost wickets continuously during the chase and this is the major reason why they lost the final. For DC, Marizanne Kapp scored the highest 40 runs in 26 balls with the help of 5 fours and 2 sixes. Apart from them, Jemimah Rodrigues and Niki Prasad also scored 30 and 25 runs respectively. But despite all this, DC had to face defeat in the final of the Women's Premier League third edition. With this, Delhi Capitals became the most unlucky team in the history of WPL, which reached the third consecutive final but could not win the trophy even once. Earlier, Delhi Capitals had lost by 7 wickets against Mumbai Indians in the 2023 WPL final and by 8 wickets against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2024 WPL final.
