Ajwa dates are one of the most loved Sunnah foods in Pakistan. Because demand is high — especially before Ramadan — the market is also full of look-alike dates sold as "Ajwa". Some are simply a different, cheaper variety; others are old stock that has been oiled to look fresh. If you are paying a premium price, it is worth knowing what genuine Ajwa looks, feels and tastes like.

Here is a simple checklist you can use the next time you buy.

1. Look at the colour and skin

Original Ajwa is very dark — almost black — with a soft, slightly matte finish. The skin has fine natural wrinkles. Be careful with dates that are shiny and glossy all over; a strong shine often means the dates have been coated with oil or syrup to hide dryness. Ajwa should never look brown or reddish like Sukkari or Mabroom.

2. Check the size and shape

Ajwa is a medium-sized date, round to slightly oval, and usually around 2.5 to 3 cm long. Very large, long dates are generally a different variety. A good box will have dates of fairly even size rather than a random mix.

3. Feel the texture

Press one date gently between your fingers. Genuine Ajwa is soft but not sticky or wet, and it springs back a little. It should not be rock-hard (too old) or mushy and leaking syrup (poorly stored or mixed with a different variety).

4. Taste the difference

Ajwa has a mild, balanced sweetness with a slightly dry, almost prune-like finish. It is not as sugary as Sukkari. Many first-time buyers expect a very sweet date and are surprised — that gentle taste is exactly what you should look for.

5. Look at the seed

Cut a date open. Ajwa has a small, slim seed relative to its flesh, and the flesh sits closely around it. The inside colour is a deep brown, not light golden.

6. Read the packaging carefully

Real Ajwa comes from Madina. A trustworthy box will clearly mention the origin, packing date and weight. Be cautious with loose dates sold without any labelling, and with "Ajwa" offered at a price far below the normal market rate — genuine Ajwa is never the cheapest date in the shop.

7. Buy from a seller who answers questions

A reliable seller will happily tell you where the dates come from, when they were packed, and how to store them. If a seller cannot answer these basics, that is a warning sign.

How to store Ajwa dates

Keep Ajwa in an airtight container away from sunlight. In Pakistan's hot summers, the fridge is the safest place; well-stored dates stay fresh for several months. Before eating, leave them out for a few minutes so they return to their natural soft texture.

A note on the Sunnah

Ajwa holds a special place for Muslims because of the well-known hadith about eating seven Ajwa dates in the morning. Whether you eat them for their nutrition — they are naturally rich in fibre, potassium and natural sugars for quick energy — or for their blessing, it makes sense to make sure you are getting the real thing.
