With the spring planting window open across much of South Africa, H2O Guru has put its irrigation package back at the front of its service list for September 2026. The Pretoria based laboratory business is asking farms, smallholdings, nurseries, estates and packhouses to have the water they will be pumping all summer analysed now, before it is committed to a season of crops rather than after a problem shows up in the field.

The reasoning is practical rather than dramatic. Irrigation water in this country is drawn from boreholes, dams, rivers, canals, storage tanks and recycled sources, and its make up is rarely constant. H2O Guru points out on its own website that water chemistry can vary significantly between sites, even where properties sit close to one another, because groundwater is shaped by geology, borehole depth, recharge conditions, neighbouring agriculture and industry, sewage systems, and the materials used in borehole construction and plumbing. Stored and municipal water can shift as well, through pipework, tanks, corrosion and blending with alternative supplies. A sample taken last summer is therefore not a reliable description of what is coming out of the pump this spring, which is the whole argument for scheduled water testing rather than occasional testing.

What the irrigation package measures

H2O Guru lists its Irrigation Water package at R1 885 including VAT, with laboratory results and analysis currently taking approximately five to seven working days. The analysis is carried out under SANS241 by a SANAS accredited laboratory operating under facility number T0647.

The parameter list for the irrigation package is deliberately broader than a simple potability screen, because water that is fit to drink and water that is fit to irrigate with are two different questions. It covers EC, pH, COD, SAR, Langelier, Ryznar, TSS, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, alkalinity, carbonate, bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, boron, manganese, iron, phosphorus, faecal coliforms and TDS.

Several of those figures matter directly to growers. Electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids describe the salt load the soil will be asked to absorb over a season. The sodium adsorption ratio speaks to soil structure. The Langelier and Ryznar indices describe scaling and corrosion tendency, which is a drip line and pump question as much as an agronomy one. Boron, chloride and sodium are watched because tolerance differs sharply between crops. Nitrogen and phosphorus figures tell a grower what nutrients the water is already delivering before any fertiliser is added. Faecal coliforms are included because irrigation water frequently touches produce that will be eaten.

Test first, then decide

H2O Guru describes its approach as test first: establish what the actual problem is, then treat only what needs treating. The company applies the same logic to its drinking water work, noting that the purpose of an analysis is not simply to produce laboratory values but to identify the factors that affect health, taste, appearance, plumbing, appliances and the performance of any treatment system. On the irrigation side that translates into choosing filtration, conditioning or blending on the basis of measured results rather than assumption, and avoiding equipment that was never needed in the first place.

That preference for measurement before spending is one of the reasons accredited water laboratories occupy the position they do in the agricultural supply chain. A laboratory report is a defensible document. It can be handed to an agronomist, an irrigation designer, a packhouse auditor or a bank, and it does not depend on anybody's opinion of how the water looks in a bucket.

Sampling, couriers and the 24 hour rule

Getting the sample right is half of the exercise, and H2O Guru publishes its sampling procedure openly. The company recommends drawing from a clean tap connected directly to the borehole rather than from a storage tank, unless the tank itself is the thing being tested. The tap should be run at a steady flow for roughly five to ten minutes to clear old water from the pipes, then wiped with an alcohol swab or a bleach solution and rinsed with the source water.

Containers should be clean plastic PET bottles, ideally the kind that mineral or still water is sold in. Glass, beverage, milk and fruit juice bottles are not suitable, and five litre bottles attract an additional R100 handling fee. The requirement is two 750ml bottles or two 500ml bottles per test. The bottle and cap are rinsed several times with the source water, filled to the top with as little air as possible, kept from touching the tap, and then labelled.

Temperature and timing then take over. Samples go into a cooler box or a fridge, stay out of the sun, and are best wrapped in a black plastic bag or placed in a small box. They should reach the laboratory within 24 hours of being taken. For clients who cannot manage that themselves, H2O Guru offers sampling at the premises by one of its own representatives or collection by courier, and it uses courier services nationwide. Fees apply to both options.

A full range of packages behind the irrigation service

Irrigation is one entry on a longer list. The company's SANS241 drinking water packages run from Microbiology Only at R945 including VAT, covering heterotrophic plate count, total coliforms, faecal coliforms and E. coli, through Chemistry Only at R1 750 including VAT, to the combined Chemistry and Microbiology package at R2 300 including VAT. The chemistry packages report on EC, pH, SAR, Langelier, Ryznar, turbidity, colour, odour, TDS, TSS, free chlorine, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, acidity, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, manganese, iron and aluminium. Turnaround is around five to seven working days for the single discipline packages and seven to ten working days for the combined one.

Bottled and purified water is handled separately under SANS1657 at R3 150 including VAT, with a wider metals and microbiology list that includes barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, antimony, arsenic, selenium, mercury, molybdenum and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and a turnaround of roughly ten to twelve working days. Waste and effluent water is quoted on enquiry and is tested for chemical and microbiological parameters used for process control, disposal and compliance with legislation, on the basis that effluent discharged to the environment eventually reaches surface and ground water.

Beyond the standard packages, further organisms can be added on request, among them Legionella, Listeria, Pseudomonas species, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio species, yeast, mould, cholera, Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter and Bacillus cereus. Terms and pricing for those are quoted individually, which is typical of how specialist water labs handle non routine determinands.

Boreholes, banks and property transfers

Spring is also a busy stretch for property transfers, and H2O Guru handles borehole bank compliance certificates as part of its work. A bank certificate is required for any property sale that relies on bank financing, and South African banks each set their own requirements for issuing a borehole yield test certificate. A borehole that does not meet those requirements can put the financing at risk.
