When I arrived in California for the first time my dreams were large but my funds were limited. Every guide told me that to see Big Sur Yosemite and San Diego beaches one needs to possess Hollywood-sized money.
Spoiler: I didn’t. My limited budget did not stop me from enjoying California's top attractions because I planned effectively and found budget-friendly activities. And guess what? You can too.
You Can Reach California on a Budget
Before moving on to discuss palm trees and Pacific sunsets I need to explain our journey. I found an excellent flight deal when I booked my California trip on weekdays and watched for price changes.
Since I departed from London I booked cheap airport parking at Heathrow to save on parking costs before my flight. Smaller savings from this type of purchase quickly build into substantial amounts.
After arriving in Los Angeles I understood that California requires substantial funds to rely on Ubers for transportation. Getting my car rental from an off-airport spot reduced the price by 40% compared to booking through the airport.
A combination of public transportation and walking plus occasional ridesharing will work for city travel. If you want to experience the true California including its beaches deserts and national parks then you must have access to your own vehicle.
National Parks: Nature’s Best Budget-Friendly Attractions
People who enjoy being outside will love California's national parks as their perfect destination. Yosemite stood out to me but I doubted I could afford park lodging. Since park hotels were too costly I chose to camp instead. I secured my campsite reservation well ahead of time because campgrounds get occupied quickly.
While staying at the park I explored its trails and marveled at El Capitan before enjoying Glacier Point's sunset.
The Joshua Tree experience brought me great satisfaction despite not being my initial plan. During the winter months I visited this peaceful destination which offered me an affordable stay without many visitors.
Watching the sunset from boulders while gazing at stars in the dark desert gave me a premium vacation feeling at a price lower than a nice restaurant meal.
City Exploring Without the High Price Tag
Although Los Angeles and San Francisco cost a lot to visit they offer affordable alternatives for tourists. In L.A., I decided to save money by passing on costly attractions and enjoying free activities in Griffith Park, Venice Beach and Silver Lake.
Visiting the Getty Museum proved remarkable and entirely free which seemed unfair against Los Angeles's high salad prices.

San Francisco possessed a comparable environment as Los Angeles. The city gains its fame from high costs but I discovered practical solutions.
I chose to take the cheap ferry to Sausalito instead of paying for an Alcatraz boat tour because it provided me with the same breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge at a lower price.
I spent my time in Chinatown without spending any money while strolling through Golden Gate Park and watching sea lions at Pier 39.
Where to Stay Without Selling a Kidney
Finding accommodation in California remains the biggest financial struggle but you can still manage it. I stayed at budget-friendly motels plus Airbnb rentals combined with hostels that had friendly social scenes.
The small-town mom-and-pop motels offered me clean and comfortable spaces at lower prices than expensive hotel chains.
Visiting state and national park campsites brought huge benefits to my travels. Staying at these affordable accommodations enabled me to discover stunning natural scenery each morning. Waking up in the redwoods? Unbeatable.
Eating Well Without Going Broke
California serves as a top food destination and you can enjoy delicious meals without needing fancy Michelin-starred eateries.
Tacos Leo became my favorite restaurant in Los Angeles while I discovered sourdough at San Francisco bakeries and enjoyed quality Thai food at affordable prices in San Diego.
I discovered at farmers' markets everything fresh and local which cost less while setting up my grocery store meal at the beach gave me the same enjoyment as restaurant dining.
One of my best finds? In-N-Out. Classic, cheap, and so very California.
Final Money-Saving Hacks
The America the Beautiful Pass from 2018 proved valuable because it gave me access to all national parks for only $80 which paid for itself after two visits. I used my travel credit card rewards to book flights free of charge and found dining specials during happy hour plus booked my rental car through discounted platforms.
To avoid unexpected costs when leaving the country I booked Heathrow airport parking ahead of time. Spending more than planned after your trip will destroy all the money-saving benefits you worked so hard to achieve.
