The EV market in India is on a rapid growth trajectory, with BYD launching its new product — the Sealion 7. BYD, which is famous worldwide for its innovative battery and EV technology, brings the premium electric SUV to the country as part of its growing local lineup. The Sealion 7 blends a daring design, solid power, and clever features, aiming to take on some of the well-known players in the mid-size electric SUV fraternity. It is rooted in the brand’s state-of-the-art e-Platform 3.0 and has a huge Blade battery, a tech-loaded cabin, and a full safety features package.

This write-up will now reveal BYD Sealion 7 overview which will include its design, battery, range, performance, features, variants, price, and more.

Design and Dimensions

The BYD Sealion 7 is sporty and stylish with a contemporary look, going by the brand’s Ocean X design language. It looks bold from the front, thanks to its sharp LED headlights and hook-shaped daytime running lights. The bumper has an X-shaped pattern that adds a bit of aggression, giving the SUV a strong road presence.

Seen from the side, the Sealion 7 has a simple and sleek appeal. The downward gradient of the roofline gives it a coupe-like form, and the door handles that are in line with the body make it feel more modern. The darkened C-pillar also helps in creating a floating roof effect, which in turn gives the car a bit of a stylish vibe. At the rear, it receives a fine LED light bar that stretches all across, and along with it are the tail lamps, which are water-drop-shaped and quite classy.

When it comes to dimensions, the Sealion 7 is 4,830mm long, 1,925mm wide, and 1,620mm high. The vehicle’s wheelbase is 2,930mm, which translates into a spacious interior. Also, its overall shape and proportions give the impression that it is not only well-balanced but also premium.

Battery, Range, and Charging

In terms of battery, the BYD Sealion 7 uses an 82.56kWh Blade battery, which is a BYD Cell-to-Body technology battery that is integrated into the car’s body. According to BYD, this approach not only lightens the weight but also increases the car’s strength and efficiency due to better cooling. They are offering the SUV in two variants — one with a single motor and rear-wheel drive, and the other with dual motors and all-wheel drive.

The rear-wheel drive variant has a range of approximately 567 km, according to the manufacturer, and an all-wheel drive model can cover up to 542 km on a single charge. Still, in everyday situations, it is predicted that the range will be closer to 500 km for the rear-wheel and approximately 370 km for the all-wheel drive car.

Charging can be done quickly and hassle-free. Fast charging with a 150 kW DC charger allows the battery to fill up from 10 % to 80 % in 32 minutes only. Additionally, the top version of the vehicle allows even faster charging at 230 kW, which results in the charging time being reduced to 24 minutes. The car also supports AC charging at 11kW and is supplied with a 7kW wallbox charger for home use.

Performance and Drive Experience

The BYD Sealion 7 is available in two variants — rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD). The RWD model produces about 310hp and 380Nm of torque and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 6.7 seconds. The AWD version is higher in power, giving 530hp and 690Nm of torque, and a much faster 0 to 100 km/h time of only 4.5 seconds. Both versions experience smoothness and control in the journey, without the abrupt jolt that some electric vehicles usually give.

On the road, the Sealion 7 drives nicely. The AWD version definitely makes the power transfer very smooth and confident, thus making it fun to drive. The suspension is set up for comfort, and it takes in the majority of small road imperfections. That being said, bigger potholes are still to feel, particularly if we are talking about the ones with the 20-inch wheels. The steering is quite light in Comfort mode and a little firmer in Sport mode, but it doesn't give the same quick response that some drivers might like.

Interior and Comfort

Upon entering the BYD Sealion 7, the first thing that comes to mind is a clean and premium interior. The dashboard design is contemporary and slightly curved, while most areas are covered in soft-touch materials. The main focus is the large 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen that can be used in both portrait and landscape modes. The dashboard also has a full-width AC vent design that complements the overall clean look.

Due to the extended wheelbase, the cabin feels roomy, and both rows have ample legroom and headroom. The front seats are provided with good cushioning and are very supportive, which helps to make long journeys relaxing. The driver enjoys a 6-way power-adjustable seat with memory function, while the co-passenger seat is 4-way electrically adjustable. The back seat is reclined at a good angle and also gives under-thigh support.
