The fuel is burned in a combustion chamber and the heat from the combustion process is transferred by means of a tubular heat exchanger to an economizer. Inside a rocking furnace, the heat is transferred by striking an arc between two electrodes, instead of the heat being generated by the combustion of fuel like in a true blast furnace or a benchtop furnace. In simple terms, the transfer of heat is done through radiation and conduction. An electric arc furnace uses radiation to transfer heat from top to bottom while the charge gets heated by the conduction of the electric arc.
