What is Tap and Pay (NFC)?
Tap and Pay is a technology that allows customers to make contactless payments by simply tapping their phone against a payment terminal. NFC, or Near-Field Communication, is the technology that enables Tap and Pay transactions.
How Does it Work?
NFC works by allowing two devices to communicate with each other when they are in close proximity. In the context of Tap and Pay, this means that your phone can communicate with a payment terminal to authorise a payment.
What are the Benefits?
There are a number of benefits to using NFC for payments:
-
Convenience: NFC payments are quick and easy to make, which makes them perfect for busy environments, such as everyday shopping.
-
Speed: NFC payments are typically processed more quickly than magnetic stripe payments, which makes them fast for all types of transactions, especially low-value payments.
-
Safety: NFC transactions are relatively safe compared to other forms of payment due to the way they work. Because your phone is unlikely to be swiped by a thief, the risk of fraudulent activity is reduced.
What are the Risks?
Like any form of payment, there are some risks associated with using NFC technology:
-
Security: As with any type of payment, it is important to ensure that your personal information is protected when making NFC payments. Make sure to use a secure PIN when authorising a payment to avoid your information being compromised.
-
Transparency: Although the security concerns surrounding NFC payments are minimal, it is still important to understand exactly how your personal data and money will be transferred. If you have any questions about the safety of a transaction, ask store staff for more information.
-
Compatibility: While NFC is becoming increasingly popular, not all payment terminals are compatible with this technology. Make sure to check that the stores you frequent have terminals that can accept NFC payments before relying on this form of payment.
How to Use Tap and Pay (NFC)?
If your phone has NFC capabilities, it’s easy to start making contactless payments. Simply follow these steps:
1. Make sure that your phone is turned on and has a strong signal.
2. Locate the NFC logo on your phone. This is usually near the top of the device, close to the camera lens.
3. Hold your phone up to the payment terminal and wait for it to make a connection.
4. A message will appear on your phone asking you to confirm the transaction by entering your PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition (depending on your device). Once complete, the payment will be processed as normal and you should receive confirmation that the transaction has been approved!
How to Check if You Have NFC Capabilities?
If you’re not sure whether your phone has NFC capabilities, it is easy to check. Simply follow these steps:
1. Open the Settings menu on your phone and select “Connections.”
2. Select “Near Field Communication” from the list of options to confirm that NFC has been enabled for your device. If it has not been enabled, you will need to do so in order to use Tap and Pay.
3. You can also check your phone’s manual for more information on NFC and how to use it.
NFC Tap and Pay is a quick and convenient way to make payments without having to fumble through your wallet or purse. With NFC technology becoming more widespread, it is likely to become the preferred method of payment for many shoppers.
