What is CCBA and How Does It Work?

The CCBA (Certification of Capability in Business Analysis) is a mid-level professional credential offered by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). In 2026, it is specifically designed for practitioners with 2–3 years of experience who have moved past entry-level tasks and are ready to take on more complex project responsibilities.

Think of it as the "Journeyman" level of business analysis: you know the rules, but now you’re proving you can modify them to fit real-world challenges.

1. How the Certification Works

The CCBA follows a strict competency-based model. It isn't just about passing a test; it's a verification of your professional history and your ability to apply the BABOK® Guide v3 standards in practice.

  • The Framework: It is based on the 6 Knowledge Areas of the BABOK® Guide, ranging from Strategy Analysis to Solution Evaluation.

  • The Validation: To get certified, you must document 3,750 hours of BA work experience earned over the last 7 years.

  • The Exam: You must pass a 3-hour, 130-question exam that is almost entirely scenario-based.

2. The 2026 Eligibility Breakdown

To "unlock" the exam, you must submit an application through the IIBA portal demonstrating the following:

Requirement: Standard Work Experience: 3,750 hours (approx. 2.5 years of full-time BA work).Knowledge Breadth: Minimum 900 hours in 2 knowledge areas OR 500 hours in 4 KAs. Professional Development 21 hours of verifiable BA training within the last 4 years. ReferencesTwo professional references (a manager, a client, or a current CBAP holder). 3. Exam Structure and Content

The 2026 CCBA exam focuses on application. You won't find many "definition" questions; instead, you'll be given a business problem and asked, "As a BA, what is the next best step?"

Knowledge Weight Focus in Requirements Analysis & Design 32% Modelling requirements and defining design options. Elicitation & Collaboration 20%: Managing stakeholder conflict and workshops. Requirements Life Cycle: 18% Prioritisation and change management. Strategy Analysis 12% Defining "Future State" and business needs. Planning & Monitoring: 12% Selecting the BA approach for a project. Solution Evaluation: 6% Measuring if a solution actually delivered value. 4. 2026 Cost Summary

Fees are tiered by region. For Region 1 (USA, UK, Canada, Australia):

  • Application Fee: $145 USD (Non-refundable)
  • Exam Fee (Member): $250 USD
  • Exam Fee (Non-Member): $405 USD
