WHAT IS A RIVETS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Industrial rivets are mechanical fasteners composed of a head on one end and a cylindrical stem on another which has the appearance of a metal pin.
How do rivet work?
When installed, the industrial rivets are either drilled, placed, or punched into a hole; afterward, the tail is deformed, holding the rivets in place.
The rivets are deformed by pounding the tail, which makes the material flatter and usually causes the tail to be expanded by about one and a half times the size of the stem’s original diameter.
When finished, the tail has the appearance of a dumbbell shape completing the riveted joint.
Riveting can create either lap or butt joints with various rivets configurations, including single, double, and zig-zag formations.
Different Types of Rivets
- Blind Rivets: These are used when seeing the other side of a joint is impossible. This type of riveting is very fast to apply and is used in various sectors, including shipbuilding and electronics. These rivets come across multiple head types, each having different benefits.
- Structural Rivets: These types of rivets are widely used to join structural steel but have been largest replaced by high-strength bolts as they do not require skilled workers to install and tighten them. These structural rivets are suitable for structural or demanding applications.
- Countersunk Head Rivets: The Countersunk Head Rivets are also known as flat rivets, used in countersunk holes. These rivets are used on sliding tracks as they sit flush with the surface, which means the head doesn’t protrude when set in place.
- Semi Tubular Rivets: The Semi Tubular Rivets, also known as tubular rivets, are the same as the solid rivets, but it has a shallow hole at the top, opposite to the head. These are the most common forms of rivets used and can be used for various applications.
- Solid Rivets: These are one of the oldest and most reliable fasteners. These solid rivets are used in applications where reliability and safety are essential. The standard head styles of solid rivets are round, countersunk, flat, oval, pan, etc.
