What Happens During a Gas Boiler Service?
If you have a boiler, it needs servicing regularly to ensure that it’s working properly and safely. A gas boiler service costs less than an emergency repair or replacement, and helps to prevent future faults. It’s also a legal requirement for landlords to provide their tenants with a Gas Safety Certificate after each boiler service.
During a gas boiler service, an engineer will look over the boiler to check for any signs of damage or corrosion. They’ll check the heat exchanger for any dirt that could be blocking it and clean it if necessary. The engineer will also test the flue pipe to make sure that it’s not blocked with debris and that gases are being vented effectively.
The engineer will also check that the pilot light is on and that it’s glowing blue. They’ll also check the boiler’s gas pressure and that it’s at the right level. The engineer will also carry out several tests on the boiler including checking the air-to-fuel ratio and ensuring that the combustion process is achieving maximum efficiency.
The engineer will also check that the cut-off devices (such as the safety valve) are working correctly to stop gas getting into the house if it’s not being used. The engineer will also test for carbon monoxide poisoning by sniffing at the hot water taps and listening to any sounds coming from the boiler. The engineer will be able to tell if there are any unusual odours or dark marks on the casing.
