What do I Need in Order to Have Golf Carts on My Campus?
Many different corporate environments use street legal golf carts for mobility purposes. It is much easier to bring employees, clients, and guests from building to building in a street legal golf cart then having them walk. Street legal golf carts are also popular at country clubs and large corporations. If you’re looking into golf carts, you’ve already thought of yet another use for them- driving around a large college campus.
Today’s college campuses are huge! When giving students or alumni a tour, it is nearly impossible to walk. It would take forever! What you need instead is a cart. In order to make this a reality for your school, you’ll need to look into a few things:
#1 A street legal golf cart. If you’re looking into golf carts to drive around your college campus, you’ll want to make sure the golf cart you get is street legal. Although it may be hard to tell the difference at first, there are several features and additions that make this type of golf cart street legal. They have seat belts, turn signals, headlights, rear lights, brake lights, windshields, as well as individual Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN).
#2 Buy a golf cart trailer. After getting the golf cart itself, a golf cart trailer is also a necessary expense. What would happen if your golf cart broke down? Perhaps someone forgot to charge it and it dies a half a mile from where the charging doc is. Noone is going to push it. That’s why a golf cart trailer for sale should be purchased at the same time as the cart itself. Accidents and mistakes happen!
#3 Cover it with Insurance. Beyond making sure the golf cart itself is street legal with lights and a windshield, you’ll also need to cover it with insurance. These requirements are included for your safety and the safety of other drivers. After all, you’ll be navigating public roads and sidewalks. You could accidentally hit someone, back into a bike, knick the golf cart on a brick wall, or otherwise cause pretty substantial damage.
#4 Learn the rules. You didn’t just get the keys to a car and hop in; you had to get a driver’s license and learn how to drive. There are still rules and regulations that apply even though you’re not driving a “real” car. It is important to note that there are legal limitations to where street legal golf carts can drive. Per Florida Statute 320.01(42), these vehicles cannot exceed 25 miles per hour and remain restricted to public roads with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or below. Don’t take your street legal golf cart onto the highway to pick up a prospective student athlete from his hotel!
When you get these four things under your belt, you’ll be all ready to drive a golf cart throughout your college campus. It is going to be so much easier than walking!
