904L stainless steel is one of watchmaking’s most commonly used stainless steel. The alloy is a non-stabilized austenitic grade designed for moderate to high corrosion resistance in various applications. It is typically available in bar, flat, structural, and tubular products.
It is a type of SS 904L that is characterized by a low carbon content and a high nickel content. This provides excellent tensile strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Also, the addition of molybdenum provides superior chloride and reduces acid resistance.
Characteristics of SS 904L
Aside from its good tensile strength, the 904L grade has outstanding toughness, especially regarding formability. This particular type of steel is capable of being elongated by 36%. Moreover, the alloy is highly resistant to crevice corrosion, seawater attack, and acid pitting in aqueous media.
The high nickel content of this type of alloy also contributes to its resistance to stress corrosion cracking. It is also susceptible to work hardening. For optimum performance, the alloy should be fully annealed after processing.
The temperature should be increased to at least 2000-2200 F. Afterwards, the alloy can be welded or machined in the standard shop fabrication methods. However, it is recommended that filler metals of equal or higher alloy content be used.
Main Functions of SS 904L
The SUS 904L alloy is usually finished with a satin or laser film finish. This type of finish is commonly applied to hot-rolled plates. Other finishes can be used to add value to the metal.
904L is high-alloy stainless steel suitable for various applications compared to other stainless steels. The low carbon content and the addition of copper give the alloy better formability. As a result, it is particularly useful in sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, and other corrosive environments.
Despite its resistance to a variety of corrosive conditions, however, it should be tempered for maximum corrosion protection.
