Dholera Greenfield Industrial City Phase 1
The first greenfield industrial smart city to be built in Dholera, spanning 920 sq km, is set to welcome its industrial residents as the project’s first phase, covering 22.5 sqkm, is nearly finished. The ambitious USD 90 billion Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, announced in 2009 by the former prime minister Manmohan Singh, includes the Dholera Industrial City, which is located approximately 110 km southwest of Ahmedabad on the western coast. The Dholera Industrial City includes 22 villages and the Dholera taluka.
The industrial hubs of Ahmedabad, Baroda, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar are close to Dholera. The fact that this is the only greenfield city and the only one of this size among the 11 smart cities planned along the DMIC with cutting-edge utility, logistical, and social infrastructure, including educational, medical, and recreational facilities, makes it significant. With an estimated investment of USD 90 billion, the DMIC is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the world. It is envisioned as a high-tech industrial zone spanning seven states along the 1,500 km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, and it will include 24 industrial regions, 11 smart cities, two airports (one of which is in Dholera), two mass rapid transit systems, and two enormous logistical hubs.
Proposed development in the first phase
In the first phase of the DMIC, it is proposed to develop 11 investment regions, including Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Manesar-Bawal in Haryana, Khushkhera-Bhiwadi-Neemrana and the Jodhpur-Pali-Marwar industrial area in Rajasthan, Pithampur-Dhar-Mhow in MP, Ahmedabad-Dholera SIR in Gujarat. With a total area of 920 sq km, the Dholera SIR is the largest of them, with a planned residential population of 2 million and more than 8 lakh employment by 2040, he added. Gujarat makes up over 36% of the DMIC, and six of the 24 industrial hubs found along the corridor are also there.
Progress of the project
According to the managing director and chief executive of Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) and Dholera Industrial City Ltd, the 100-metre-wide storm water canal, which is expected to be done at the earliest, makes up the majority of the remaining important infrastructure work, which amounts to just around 5% of the whole project. Other significant work is finished. This city has already received investments of Rs 3,000 crore (excluding land costs), of which around Rs 1,400 crore have been used to construct the essential facilities.
