Walking and talking therapy is best described as using the “traditional outdoor counseling method.” It is a form of talking therapy in which the counselor and their client walk together along a local route, such as a shoreline, public trail, or park, while conducting a counseling session.
This form of therapy can be particularly helpful for people who find the traditional counseling room claustrophobic, who struggle to find time to go out, and can help change current perceptions and feelings of being “stuck”. Walking and talking therapy can also be helpful for people who struggle to discuss their feelings and may use nature as a metaphorical expression of emotion.
Walking and talking therapy can be a particularly useful method of working for people who do not get the opportunity to go out in nature very often, and for those who feel that they do better when they do. I have learned that therapeutic conversations with clients in the wild, whether while walking, sitting in a wooded clearing, or a combination of both, add a completely different and positive dynamic to the experience.
Of course, counseling at the clinic, by phone or online still has its place for many clients. However, since the choice of how the sessions will proceed must always rest with the client, it is important to outline the benefits of walking and talking counseling so that you understand the multiple options.
Outdoor counseling is good for those who may feel a bit anxious or claustrophobic in a one-on-one room setting – the potential intensity of eye contact is removed for those who find it an uncomfortable part of the therapy work.
When we move our bodies and change our environment, we can think differently about aspects of our lives that previously seemed static. Being outside is a physically more relaxing experience for our bodies and therefore our minds can open up more freely.
Therapy work outside can help with the feeling of being “stuck” as we physically move forward in sessions and the feeling of looking forward to the changes that clients want from therapy.
Being outdoors releases endorphins and improves overall mood, can promote weight loss, lower blood pressure, boost immunity, speed up digestion and improve heart health.
Walking side by side also means a sense of equality and unity in the client-counselor partnership, along with the often immensely valuable silences in therapy that are much easier to bear for many people.
