View my Livspace Review to Learn How the Brand Maximized my Small Space
Space can be an issue in a small house of 1200sq feet, especially for a family of four with two adults working from home and hosting families from out of state for extended periods of time. A few of our friends suggested buying a bigger house for better office space and playrooms for kids. I have never been interested in large houses. I prefer the cosiness of a smaller house and find that it’s easier to maintain and clean. Also, I like that it constantly forces us to review what we have to avoid accumulating too many things. As a result of further advice and still being confused, I hired Livspace. The decision changed my life!
As of now, our home is the perfect size for us, and we both feel like we have the space to grow in the house. Overall, a small house does mean some sacrifices. It is important to carefully plan how and what you buy to fill the space. To help you feel more at ease in your space, here are some tips I have learned from Livspace interior designers and implemented in my own home to enable me to live a minimalist life without feeling crowded.
1) Use versatile furniture: It is tempting to buy furniture based on style alone. However, I always purchase what I call smart furniture, which is versatile and flexible. If you want an extra sleeper on your sofa, an extension to your kitchen island, or a coffee table with more storage, this can be the solution. A Livspace interior designer helped me find the perfect pieces for my home.
One example of this is the extendable table in our family room. About 97% of the time, just my husband and I dine at our table. Thus, we don’t need 8 people at a table so that we can use the area for more useful things such as ample space for my son to play on his toy truck. So I purchased a table with an extension. Even if we have guests over or hold potlucks or dinners 3% of the time, we can easily seat 8 people at the table.
2) Add extra beds: You won’t have a whole room that you can use as a guest room in a smaller home. Therefore, you should add sleeping areas to every corner. The sleeper sofa on our couch is the reason we chose it. In my husband’s office, we also installed a twin bed with a trundle. We can sleep with 2 adults in comfort without having to modify our bedroom. Thanks to Livspace’s tips, I have created a small apartment that doesn’t look that small anymore.
3) Smart Storage (Utilize the space you have): Due to its size, a small house is much easier to clean than a large one. Additionally, they look messy faster, so they’re tricky. The simplest item can quickly establish a cluttered look. Everything must have a place. A small house, however, usually requires thinking outside of the box to maximize its storage space. We had a somewhat awkwardly large downstairs bathroom that was only used for the toilet and sink. My space could be better utilized. For added storage, I added a shelf along the top wall. We can store items we don’t necessarily need every day in it, and it uses unused space along with the ceiling.
4) A Multi-Purpose space: We can utilize almost every space in our house in multiple ways. My husband’s office serves as the family room; our breakfast nook serves as my filming studio. There is no denying the fact that spaces can be used differently and that you need furniture and storage that support this.
5) Minimalism isn’t necessary: In most cases, people believe that you have to be a minimalist to live comfortably in a small house. People often think their houses should have light furniture, white walls, and minimal decor to avoid the feeling that the house is too small. The opposite is true, however. I painted our front wall a dark navy colour as soon as we moved into our house. I also painted the guest bathroom dark green. Art was hung, patterned rugs were bought, and I embraced colour.
A smaller home has its benefits, although too much clutter can make any room seem smaller, notably its sense of cosiness. Do not be afraid to introduce patterns, decor, or colour into your home. To come up with design ideas, you should seek the help of an interior designer. The designers at Livspace reviewed my house and then recommended designs for my house. All renovations have been completed, and my house looks wonderful.
