Use and advantages of VSAT Networks
In the contemporary age, people need access to enterprise-class, high-speed voice, video and data applications wherever they happen to be. Satellite connectivity like VSAT systems, essentially has the power to drive communication advances across a wide range of geographies and industries. Hence, VSAT Internet in Africa has become quite popular today. VSAT applications help in meeting an expansive range of needs, right from providing internet to remote, rural classrooms, to ensuring vital data and communications for petroleum operations.
VSAT means Very Small Aperture Terminal. It has three main components– the satellite, a central hub with a big antenna dish, and a number of nodes that are made up of smaller dish antenna at diverse geographical locations to form a network through the satellite. All of these nodes communicate with the central hub by using the satellite as a medium for communication. In case an additional network, such as internet connectivity has to be integrated with the VSAT network, it can be done at a Network Operations Center located at the central hub, to make sure that multiple nodes in varied locations can also have access to the internet connection. Advantages of VSAT Networks:
- Access in remote locations: This is the biggest advantage of VSAT network. Under this system, a geosynchronous satellite floats on a fixed spot relative to the ground and covers a third of the surface of the earth with its mean. It can provide connectivity to any area covered by the satellite beam. A satellite may also put emphasis on a specific high density region, and several satellites can work together to provide global coverage.
- Internet Access: VSAT network has the capacity to carry both voice and video. It can provide internet access apart from point to point WAN links. Broadband internet services are also possible with VSAT networks.
- Rapid deployment: As the satellite is in orbit, the deployment at the customer premises or nodes might be done in a few hours or even minutes if the equipment is available. As long as the location is covered by the satellite beam, a VSAT Engineer in Africa would be able to deploy the system.
- VPN: VSAT supports encryption of all data transmitted between two sites or multiple sites, making Virtual Private Networks utilization possible. VPN on VSAT networks are usually used for Corporate and Government or Defense connectivity requirements.
