USA Vs Wales – How Weston McKennie, Matt Turner and others look before Football World Cup
The USA will take the field at the Football World Cup in the first match against Wales in less than three weeks. It’s right around the corner. This means that every injury, every goal, every good performance and every bad performance will be disassembled and analyzed for how it can affect the US team in Qatar. The move to the autumn tournament means that, unlike previous FIFA World Cups, injured players have very little leeway.

Whereas in years past players have had several weeks of rehab and treatment at the end of club seasons, an injury that delays you by two or three weeks in this cycle could make you completely out of the Football World Cup. The tight deadlines also mean that form can matter even more than usual.
Interestingly, this reverses the scenario for MLS players. Typically, during the summer Football World Cup, MLS players are in the midst of their regular seasons and form is not an issue. This time the MLS players were out for several weeks before the game. It might be good when viewed in the context of injuries, but it certainly doesn’t help with the intensity of the match. To mitigate this somewhat, MLS USMNT players whose teams didn’t make it to the playoffs gathered in Frisco, Texas for a camp aimed at keeping them fit.
There have been a lot of names with injuries in the US lately. At least six players competing for a spot on the roster have been injured or missed games in the last two weeks. With just 20 days to go before this reveal, let’s take a look, position by position, to see how form and fitness are currently affecting the USMNT.
Goalkeepers
The bad news starts here for U.S. fans.
Injured
Anticipated starter Matt Turner has missed his last two games for Arsenal with a groin and hip injury. Turner, 28, joined the Premier League club from the New England Revolution this summer and found himself in a position to back England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. This means that every game Turner could get for the Gunners had to be important. It’s no small feat for him to miss the start of the Europa League, and US staff are certainly hopeful that Turner will be back on the pitch for Football World Cup on November 3rd and 9th.
Not playing or out of form
NYCFC’s Sean Johnson has just been eliminated from the Eastern Conference playoffs and therefore won’t have a game against Qatar. However, Johnson is expected to be the third goaltender, so his playing time is less of a concern. He played very well for the NYCFC until Sunday’s elimination.
Playing regularly
Zach Steffen continues to play for Middlesbrough in the Premier League, although his performances are not very convincing. Ethan Horvath also plays regularly in the league with Luton Town.
Fullbacks
Injured
Right-back Sergino Dest had a bit of an injury fear, but AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli said this week that Dest would be available to play at the weekend. The defender, who turns 22 on November 3, is expected to play for the Americans in Qatar. He has mostly come off the bench since he arrived at Milan on loan from Barcelona.
Anthony Robinson returned to the Fulham squad after an ankle injury prevented him from making it to the September camp. However, the US is a little unnerved that Robinson told The Athletic that he is still trying to get used to playing on one ankle.
Not playing or out of form
DeAndre Yedlin’s Inter Miami were eliminated from the MLS playoffs on October 17, and Nashville’s Shaq Moore on October 15. Both Yedlin and Moore are in the American MLS player camp.
Playing regularly
Reggie Cannon continues to play regularly for Boavista in Portugal, as does Gladbach’s Joe Scully. As a left-back, Sam Vines continues to play at Antwerp, looking to stay on the field as a potential understudy for Robinson. For more know about Football World Cup Tickets.
Center backs
Hold on tight. There isn’t much good news here.
Injured
Chris Richards was the player who was supposed to be a starter when Miles Robinson went down with a torn Achilles tendon earlier this year. Unfortunately, Richards only played 201 minutes after his last game of the Bundesliga season last April due to injuries. He has not played for Crystal Palace since 27 August and, according to Palace manager Patrick Vieira, will not return to team training until next week. For context, Aaron Long has since played over 2,600 minutes for RBNY and USMNT, over 500 of those since August 27th.
Not playing or out of form
Walker Zimmerman is on the starting lineup for Team USA. Unfortunately, he hasn’t played a game since October 15 as his team from Nashville was eliminated from the MLS playoffs.
Long, who started regularly alongside Zimmerman since June, was also eliminated from the MLS playoffs early and will have more than a month without games when the US starts playing in Qatar Football World Cup. In his final game, in a 2–1 loss to Cincinnati on October 15, forward Brandon Vasquez passed Long to score the game-winning goal, raising concerns about Long’s form.

The rest of the candidates for this position play in their clubs, and it seems that four players are vying for a couple of places in the squad: Cameron Carter-Vickers, Mark McKenzie, Eric Palmer-Brown and Tim Rome.
Carter-Vickers is a starter for Celtic and looks set to make the cut. McKenzie started all six games in October for Genk, winning them all. Palmer-Brown started last week for Troyes against Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé in a 4-3 loss. He was a regular starter throughout the season in Ligue 1.
Ream is perhaps the most intriguing candidate. He has been a regular at Fulham, leading a team currently ranked seventh in the Premier League. Rome also has chemistry with Robinson, who starts at Fulham’s left-back. At the same time, Fulham have conceded 22 goals this season, tied with Brentford for fourth place in the Premier League, and Rome have not played for the United States since September last year. If he is called up for the Football World Cup, it will be a surprise, but potentially a good surprise given the problems in the position.
Central midfielders
Injured
The U.S. got some bad news this week when Juventus announced that Weston McKenny was out for at least 15 days with a quadriceps injury. McKenny has been a regular starter for Juventus this season and is expected to be one of the first names on American coach Gregg Berhalter’s Football World Cup team list. The 15-day return ties McKenny’s return to Nov. 14, just in time for him to report back to Qatar World Cup with Team USA.
Luca de la Torre is doing a little worse. Celta de Vigo announced that de la Torre is expected to be out for at least three weeks with a hamstring injury or until around November 20, the day before the US is set to open against Wales. It remains unclear whether this is keeping de la Torre from participating in the American roster, but the two potential candidates behind him, Eric Williamson and George Mihailovic, were not even included in the MLS fitness camp, so de la Torre could be on the list. as he regains his physical form. It is worth noting that de la Torre spent only 54 minutes in the entire season in La Liga.
Not playing or out of form
One of the members of the American fitness camp is Christian Roldan from Seattle. The Sounders didn’t make the playoffs this year, which means Roldan last played on October 9th. Roldan, considered a tough guy on the roster, was able to return from groin surgery and play in three games at the end of the season. It will be a great relief to USMNT fans that the two most important players on this American team are healthy and playing well. Tyler Adams had some injury fears but returned to the Leeds squad and played well in a win over Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.
Yunus Musa is expected to be a breakout player in the Football World Cup and after missing September training camp due to injury, he returned to Valencia’s La Liga squad. The 19-year-old is vital to how the US wants to play in midfield, and his value increased when de la Torre was injured.
One player on the edge of the list is 20-year-old Malik Tillman. The German-American had an inconsistent season on loan with the Rangers, where fans focused on his perceived lack of effort despite Rangers hoping to highlight his technical ability. There is a similar dynamic between Tillman and many American fans, but Tillman has started in Scotland and the Champions League and has a legitimate shot at a Qatar Football World Cup squad when announced next week.
Wingers
Injured
This is the only injury-free position as Gio Reina and Tim Weah returned to the pitch with their clubs last month after previous illnesses.
Not playing or out of form
The two players who are veterans of this American team are part of the MLS players’ fitness camp. Paul Arriola and Dallas ended their season on October 23rd. Jordan Morris, meanwhile, hasn’t played a game since October 9th. This is not a good development for Morris, who is fighting for one of the last places in the squad.
Playing regularly
All four key names in this position play regularly at major clubs. Christian Pulisic started three of his last five games for Chelsea, scoring in a win over Wolves and providing an assist in the Champions League against RB Salzburg. The US star player seems to be in good shape right now and the US hopes this carries over to the Football World Cup.
Tim Weah is recovering from an injury that hampered him at the start of the season. He gradually went from 17 minutes on 9 October to 26 minutes and two assists on 14 October, his first start of the season and a solid 69 minutes on 30 October in a loss to Lyon. That’s solid progress for a player who brings pace and verticality to the US roster.
Gio Reina injured his hamstring while playing in the US in September but made six appearances for Dortmund in October, including a couple of starts. He also scored against Stuttgart on 22 October, his first goal for Borussia in over 400 days.
Brenden Aaronson has started every game in October for Leeds and continues to set Premier League distance running records. His 13.2km run in Leeds’ victory over Liverpool was the longest run by any Premier League player this season. Grab your England Vs Wales Tickets from our website.

After eight goals in 12 games for Norwich between mid-August and mid-October, Josh Sargent suffered a calf injury that left him unable to beat Stoke City last weekend and would not be able to play in their game against ” Stoke City” in the middle of the week. CPR. Norwich manager Dean Smith says it is hoped Sargent will return for Saturday’s game against Rotherham.
Not playing or out of form
Not only were Jesús Ferreira’s Dallas team eliminated from the playoffs on October 23, but the 2022 MLS Young Player of the Year also didn’t score in his last seven games at club level. Ferreira’s final goal came on 10 September when he had a brace against LAFC finishing the season with 18 goals and six assists.
Playing regularly
The US is looking to get more goals from Ricardo Pepi and Jordan Pefok at club level. Pepi is a regular at Groningen’s not-so-great team and has scored six goals in eight games since joining Holland on loan. Pepi’s last goal came in a win over PSV Eindhoven on 22 October.
Pefok, meanwhile, got a little colder. After scoring four goals and having two assists in his first eight games this season, Pefok has scored no goals and provided one assist in his last eight games. His last goal was scored on 18 September. Pefok’s chances on Team USA have been limited, but he will still be in contention for a spot due to his aerial ability and could potentially play a role as a super-substitute in Qatar Football World Cup.
