TYPES OF PACKAGING
When you’re in a competitive market, few things are more important than being recognized right away. Your brand needs to convey the feeling of being a perfect fit for the audience you created it for. The most transparent approach to achieve this is through proper packaging design, and the first step is to choose from the seven most frequent types of packaging.
When it comes to packaging, two components ensure brand awareness the type of packaging and the design. Think about it: Starbucks cups are recognized by almost everyone all over the world. Many people recognize Barilla pasta from a kilometer away. When you see a turquoise box from Tiffany’s, you immediately know what it contains.

While planning your brand identity, take the time to figure out which types of packaging are suitable for your brand and which of these is the best. Of course, you always have the option to put your product in an ordinary box or bag, but if you can avoid that, that’s what you should do. Read on to see what different types of packaging are available to you?
Choosing the correct type of packaging
You can’t keep a liquid in a cardboard box (obviously). When considering which type of packaging is right for your product, there are many things to consider, for example:
The product is stored (in your warehouse, on the shelf, in transit, and at the buyer’s home).
The fragility of your product – does it need to be protected from possible falls or hits?
You are storing your product on the shelf. Is it perishable food that needs refrigeration?
How many products are packed together? For example, a can of roasted peanuts requires different packaging than a single cake.
How heavy your product is. When shipping, you pay by weight. So bulky packaging for an already rich product can mean that you pay extra for shipping.
There is a hierarchy for the different types of packaging:
Outer packaging
This is the most challenging part of the packaging and usually consists of thick cardboard boxes that can protect products (sometimes several) against hits and falls.
Inner packing
The inner packaging offers an additional cushion against bumps: think, for example, of the paper in a gift box or the bubble wrap that protects fragile products during transport.
Product packaging
The product packaging is – as you can probably guess – the closest thing to the individual product. It’s the box of your favorite chocolates or the protective film for your new phone. Would you please read our product packaging guide to learn all about how to design great packaging?
Check out how other brands are packaging their products with similar products. Of course, you don’t have to package your product like everyone else, but it’s always good to see what works for other brands. For some products, only one type of packaging makes sense. With others, you have some leeway and the opportunity to surprise, for example, when you pack gardening gloves in a reusable jar or sell dried beans in a box.
Many products use two of the more types of packaging, for example, paper and a box or a bottle and a printed label. Think about how different types of packaging can work together and how they can work together to present your unique product.
Boxes
When we say “boxes,” we are not just talking about classic, square cardboard boxes. We mean any box, even boxes that are not square – or made of cardboard. Cardboard boxes are boxes; cans are boxes too if it’s a closed container with solid walls to protect its contents, it’s a box.
Packaging design of boxes
Boxes are the most common type of packaging because they are light and practical. Does your packaging have to be reliable on the shelf or the floor? Do you need packaging that can be easily put into a larger box or transport container? Boxes are simple. You can pack pretty much anything in one box.
Boxes can also be designed efficiently. You have flat, solid surfaces that are perfect for printing logos or other designs.
Red and black phone packaging designs
Do you remember how we said boxes don’t have to be square? A TV with its unique shape can be a powerful way to make your packaging the focus of your branding identity. Having your product on the shelf in stores is great because the packaging is the first thing a potential buyer sees.
When designing your boxes, imagine how buyers will look at them. Will their first glance be the side of the box on the shelf, or will they see the top first when taking it from a large pallet?
