Travel vlogging with wireless range extenders
I am a travel blogger and my job requires me to post every single thing I do online. That is basically every single second of my tour ignoring my personal time. Every time I go for a tour I get to stay at some hotel that provides me with wifi but with a range that forces me to sit near the door for some reason in order to even be able to connect to it. This happened with every single hotel I used to stay at. The range used to come into a small corner of the room or mostly near the door and I had to stand or sit near it to actually gain access to the Internet.
Thanks to the amazingly high roaming internet charges I needed to use the wireless internet that the hotel provided for free. I decided to get myself an extender and use it on my travels. The extender would go into a power socket and then all I would need to do is set it up to get connected to the hotel network and then just extend the range to me a bit and I would be happy enough to upload my whole day worth of content online without any hassle.
Setting up the extender in the spot
Whenever I enter a new hotel the first thing I do is to set up my extender to the wireless router network of the hotel. I use the ap.setup which is an offline setup wizard to do so. All I need to do is to plug in my extender into a power socket in order to turn it on. Then j connect it to my computer wirelessly using the extenders WiFi name. After that, I can open the browser and type http://ap.setup to access the setup link. I can also use the IP address to be redirected to the same login page. Here I would need to login using the default credentials already mentioned.
After that, it will take me to the http://ap.setup admin panel where I will need to enter the details of the WiFi router such as the SSID and the password in order to allow the extender to connect to the router easily. After that, I can simply connect to the extender network which will in turn have connected to the WiFi network of the hotel. The network will have extended and now I have WiFi connection all over my room and not just near the door and therefore mission accomplished.
The WPS method is another way in which you can setup your extender. If you do not seem to know the password of the device or router. Simply go and plug the extender into a power socket near the WiFi router. Then simply go and press the WPS button on the WiFi router. Then go and press the WPS button on your extender. The connection will be made. Now you can disconnect it and connect it anywhere and it will automatically connect to your router and extend its network.
Resetting your device for multiple uses and firmware updates
While going from hotel to hotel the WiFi networks keep on changing and I do not seem to find the time to change the settings on the extender every single time. Therefore I reset it to its factory settings so I can reprogram it all over again whenever I want. I can do it by pushing the reset button on the device and holding it until it resets. I can then proceed to reprogram it again.
I can also do that from the setup link where I will need to login and press the reset to the factory settings button in the settings and the job will be done. About the firmware updates I can do that from http;//ap.setup too. All I need to do is press the check for firmware updates option and then download and install them from the click of a button. It doesn’t get any easier than that. Also, the firmware updates contain important bug fixes and security patches and do affect the performance of the extended directly so don’t forget to install them regularly.
