Transform Your Yoga Practice with the Yoga Sutras | HUA
In this course, you will learn about the teachings of yoga as outlined in the Yoga Sutras by Maharishi Patanjali. The Yoga Sutras are a collection of brief, pithy aphorisms that explain the fundamental principles of yoga practice and philosophy. Ashtanga Yoga is one of the core tenets of the Yoga Sutras, emphasizing a holistic approach to yoga’s tenets. The Yoga Sutras provide a thorough breakdown of the mind’s workings and instructions for calming an anxious mind.
In this course, we will explore many themes found in the Yoga Sutras, including the reason for doing yoga and the final aim of all yogic techniques. Patanjali presents three primary schools of yoga practice: Kriya Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and Samadhi Yoga. We will also cover the challenges that can be encountered on the yoga journey and ways to overcome them.
We will explain the most well-known aspects of yoga, such as asanas, pranayama, and meditation, and their place in the larger tradition. In addition to understanding Ashtanga Yoga’s eight limbs, we will also comprehend key phrases from the Yoga Sutras, such as abhyasa, vairagya, chitta, vritti, klesha, samyama, parinama, kaivalya, and many others.
By the end of the course, you will have the skills to understand Patanjali’s teachings on yoga and liberation, incorporate yogic practices into your daily routine, differentiate the four pillars, three currents, and eight limbs that make up yoga, identify the five mental illnesses and nine roadblocks that prevent you from calming your thoughts, and learn strategies for calming your mind down when overwhelming feelings arise.
The class structure involves at least one hour of weekly interaction time with a professor or lecturer, independent research, class discussions, and one or two brief essays throughout the semester. The essays do not have to be scholarly works, but they should be based on your own analysis and understanding of the course material.
