Indian consumers enjoy grapes as a commercial fruit. The Indian grape season, which runs from November to March each year, is made possible by the country’s hot and dry climate.  The Top 10 Grape-Producing States in India .

 

  1. Maharashtra: Maharashtra continues to be the grape powerhouse of India, contributing a substantial 70.67% to the nation’s grape production in the 2021-22 season. This state produced over 2,466 thousand metric tonnes (MT) of grapes, owing its success to diverse climate and soil conditions that favor grape cultivation.
  2. Karnataka: Another key player in India’s grape production, Karnataka, boasts the Bijapur and Bagalkot districts as its primary grape-growing regions. In 2021-22, it contributed 24.49% of the total production, with over 854 thousand MT of grapes.
  3. Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu ranks as India’s third-largest grape-producing state, producing approximately 50 thousand MT of grapes in 2021-22, making up 1.43% of the national total. Grape cultivation is prominent in the districts of Theni and Coimbatore, catering to both domestic and international markets.
  4. Andhra Pradesh: With a production of 46.82 thousand MT of grapes, Andhra Pradesh contributes 1.34% to the country’s grape production. The Anantapur and Chittoor districts have emerged as significant grape-producing hubs, supported by government initiatives promoting grape cultivation.
  5. Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh, known for its agricultural diversity, is making its mark in grape production. It contributed 1.02% to the national production, with 35.45 thousand MT of grapes in 2021-22. Improved infrastructure, market access, and government support have fuelled the growth of grape farming in the state.
  6. Mizoram: Surprisingly, Mizoram in the northeastern part of India is gaining recognition in grape production. It accounted for 0.5% of the total grape production in 2021-22, producing 17.3 thousand MT. This expansion into grape farming showcases the adaptability of this crop across different regions of India.
  7. Telangana: Telangana has actively promoted horticulture, including grape cultivation, to boost farmers’ income. Regions like Rangareddy have witnessed a surge in grape production, contributing around 0.29% with a total of 10.02 thousand MT in 2021-22.
  8. Punjab: Punjab, primarily known for wheat and rice production, has diversified into grape cultivation, supported by government encouragement. With a 0.2% contribution to the total production in 2021-22, it produced 6.98 thousand MT of grapes.
  9. Jammu & Kashmir: Known for apples and saffron, Jammu & Kashmir has steadily increased its grape production, producing 1.50 thousand MT in 2021-22, contributing 0.05% to the total production. This diversification offers additional income opportunities for farmers.
  10. Haryana: Haryana, with its favourable climatic conditions and soil quality, is making strides in grape farming, producing 0.01% of the total grapes in India in 2021-22.
