Things To Do In Budapest That Won’t Blow Your Budget

The Hungarian capital is a hidden gem, with an amazing array of things to do that won’t blow your budget. From chaotic ruin bars to blissful outdoor spas to steaming bowls of goulash and langos flatbreads smothered in cheese, Budapest has it all. And it doesn’t show off about it, either – instead of overpriced restaurants and attractions, the city offers plenty for those looking to enjoy its unique heritage without spending a fortune.

Start your trip at the Hungarian Parliament, the largest government building ever built in the world and an impressive sight to behold. Then walk north to the Jewish Quarter, where you can see the Great Synagogue, which was restored in the 1990s and is a gorgeous example of art nouveau architecture. From there, wander along Kalvin ter street and Vamhaz krt to the Central Market (Kaisermüze), where you can explore a fascinating flea market that also features an excellent Middle Eastern restaurant called Mazel Tov. Make sure to visit the weeping willow memorial garden, which is adorned with metal leaves bearing the names of those who were killed by the Nazis and Soviets in Budapest’s ghettos and concentration camps.

Climb up Gellert Hill to admire Budapest’s spectacular skyline and then reward yourself with a visit to Fuge Shop and Cafe, a little-known gem among locals that serves the city’s best gelato (white chocolate hazelnut pistachio is my personal favourite). This lovely spot is a great place to stop for a bite after hiking up the steep path from Szechenyi Bridge and the Danube to the top of the hill.

The Basilica of St Stephen is another must-see. The interior is spectacular, and a reliquary holds the reported right hand of St Stephen, the first King of Hungary. The outside of the church is impressive, too – its neo-Gothic architecture and seven fairytale-like towers are a beautiful site to behold.
