THE YOGA OF THE YOGA SUTRAS | HINDU UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA
This course will take students on a journey of exploration of yoga as expressed in the Yoga Sutras of Maharishi Patanjali. The Yoga Sutras encode the basic principles of yoga practice and yoga philosophy in the form of short, concise aphorisms. The basic principles of yoga practices like asanas (yoga postures), pranayama (yoga breath work), dhyana (meditation) etc. are clearly and thoroughly expressed in the yoga sutras. One of the core teachings of the Yoga Sutras is the Ashtanga system of yoga, a highly structured and carefully crafted set of eight holistic disciplines (limbs) of yoga. The Yoga Sutras also present a detailed analysis of the mechanics of the mind and how to transform a troubled mind into a calm mind.
Today, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras have gained popularity as a key text for yoga practice. In fact, all the yoga practices we do on the yoga mat are rooted in the teachings of Patanjali. By applying the principles taught in the Yoga Sutras, we can profoundly elevate the quality of our own yoga practice. In addition, the yoga sutras contain wisdom that can be applied in every aspect of life, including off the yoga mat. Examples include how to interact with different types of people in a way that promotes harmony, how to cultivate higher values and virtues, how to manage impulsive tendencies of the mind, how to express excellence in action, and even how to be an effective leader. in the communities in which we are located.
