The Workings of Kidnap and Ransom Coverage
The kidnappers often pressure the victims to keep quiet about the incident. That’s difficult and may cause problems when an employer or family member contacts the insurance provider. That’s why many K&R plans include a clause that requires you to let them know about changes. It states that the kidnap victim’s family, workplace, or other concerned parties should only contact the insurance company and law enforcement when it is safe.
As soon as they are notified, insurers send rescue teams to help secure the abducted person’s safe return. Help is provided through ransom negotiations, ransom delivery, rescue, and medical attention.
However, an insurer will not pay a ransom directly. Instead, the company or family must find the money elsewhere, such as via a loan. Keep in mind that the interest on borrowed money, for this reason, is often covered by K&R plans. After the crisis has passed, the insurer will pay the policyholder the ransom money and any other costs incurred. The policyholder is liable for any expenditures beyond a certain maximum.
