Islam has long valued volunteerism.
We can begin by looking at how the word “volunteering,” which refers to the voluntary or supererogatory acts of worship, is used throughout the Holy Qur’an.
And whomever gives properly (or excessively), the better for him. Sacred Qur’an 2:184
“And whomever does good deeds, Allah is surely grateful and wise.” (Supreme Qur’an 2: 158)
Every Muslim who does their required acts of prayer, such as fasting during Ramadan, will be rewarded. It is actually against the law to stop doing the required acts of worship, such as the five daily prayers, the zakat, and the Ramadan fast. Muslims’ rewards are, however, abundantly enhanced when they go above and beyond to observe voluntary fasts, such as those observed every Monday and Thursday or during the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah. Allah enjoys witnessing the voluntary worship of His obedient people.
The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said, in an authentic Hadith, “Allah says: ‘My slave does not draw nearer to Me by anything more beloved to Me than that which I have made obligatory upon him, and My slave continues to draw nearer to Me by doing nawafil (supererogatory or voluntary) deeds until I love him, and if I love him I will be his sight with which he sees, his hearing with If he were to ask Me, I would unquestionably give; if he were to come to Me for sanctuary, I would unquestionably give it to him. (Al-Bukhari)
Allah enjoys seeing his followers go above and beyond what is required of them. This includes giving of your time, resources, abilities, and efforts to benefit your neighbourhood.
So hurry to the good, declares Allah in the Holy Qur’an. Sacred Qur’an 2:148
Be the best and the first to accomplish good deeds and assist others. Take initiative.
“O you who have believed, bend and prostrate and adore your Lord and do good – that you may prosper,” Allah commands in the verse that follows. Sacred Qur’an 22:77
Islam teaches us to spread goodness.
“The most beloved individuals to Allah are those who are most beneficial to the people,” the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) remarked. (Mujam Al-Awsat)
This is a huge door that is wide open for us to receive great blessings from Allah. Muslims in the past knew the importance of sharing, helping others, and giving away their money for the good of their communities.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to call the Muslims of Madinah to a common cause, to aid the needy, and to give liberally. The rich Muslims were urged by the Prophet (peace be upon him) to donate to As-Suffah, the most underprivileged neighbourhood in Al-Madinah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked the Muslims for contributions when he first arrived in Madinah following his migration in order to build the masjid.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) never stopped encouraging his companions to cultivate an attitude of generosity and assistance.
“The most cherished deed to Allah is to make a Muslim happy, or to take away one of his problems, or to remove one of his burdens, or to forgive his debt, or to satisfy his hunger,” he (peace be upon him) remarked. I would rather accompany a brother in need on a walk than spend a month by myself in this mosque in Al-Madinah. On the day when the footings are rocked, Allah the Exalted will make the footing firm for whomever travels beside his brother in relation to a need until he secures it for him. (Mujam Al-Awsat)
The Muslim community needs to assist and support its numerous brothers and sisters. Some residents of our neighbourhood lack family or any other form of support, so they depend on us to be there for them.
Another good deed that many of us may not be aware of is bringing forgiveness and reconciliation between a husband and wife, bringing peace and reconciliation between disputing neighbours, or helping family members overcome their conflicts.
Shall I not tell you something that is better than the status of (voluntary) fasting, prayer, and charity, questioned the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him). They responded “Yes.” In a case of conflict, he (peace be upon him) stated, “Reconciling.” (At-Tirmidhi)
Having positive, harmonious connections with your Muslim brothers and sisters is essential to your faith.
“Settle disputes among your brothers; for the believers are but brethren. And fear Allah so that He may have pity on you. Sacred Qur’an 49:10
I want to leave you with a story. We all know this story, but how many of us actually apply the truths it teaches?
The protagonist of the tale is a black-skinned, impoverished woman named Umm Mihjan who lived in the Masjid of Al-Madinah and was responsible for maintaining and cleaning it.
According to Aby Hurayrah, “The mosque used to be cleaned by a black lady. She was missing, and the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) inquired about her. He learned that she had passed away. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Why didn’t you tell me? ” They (the Companions) appeared to view the situation as unimportant. Show me her grave, he (peace be upon him) commanded. He prayed the Janazah (funeral prayer) over it when it was shown to him and remarked, “These graves conceal people in them with darkness, and Allah illuminates them for the inmates as a result of my plea for them.” Muslim and Al-Bukhari
We should take care of one another as Muslims. We must become involved and give back to our communities.
When you perform something for Allah’s sake, according to Imam As-Suyuti, you will reap the benefits and enjoy its pleasure both in this life and in the Hereafter. The Prophet of Pity paid tribute to this black woman who helped her community by cleaning the masjid, and he went to her tomb to ask Allah for mercy and forgiveness on her behalf.
Is the recompense for good [anything] but good? asks Allah in the Qur’an. (Qur’an, Chapter 55:60)
You will reap goodness if you plant seeds of goodness.
