The historical development of the Mother’s Day celebration
I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day! You may be surprised to learn the truth about the origins of Mother’s Day in America. This particular day was made possible by the work of three women who advocated for social change in health, welfare, peace, and love. Another story with a tragic twist.
Who came up with the idea of a day dedicated to moms?
Three women, Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Anna M. Jarvis, are widely credited for pioneering the concept of a national Mother’s Day.
An Unfortunate Legacy
Many believe Anna wanted to celebrate her mother since she was the genuine Mother’s Day creator. She didn’t want women’s groups, charity foundations, or public health reformers using the holiday to collect money, which is odd given her mother’s commitment to improving public health via education and advocacy. Anna Jarvis passed away from dementia at a mental institution in 1948.
Presenting: Mother’s Day
The celebration of mothers continues and develops with time. Modern Mother’s Day recognizes the many hats moms wear, just as many women wore when it was first conceived. We honor moms who have taken up causes like social justice and peacemaking to help their kids out. We celebrate the strong, loving moms who have brought the world into existence.
