THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINGLE IP ADDRESSES AND SHARED IP ADDRESSES
When someone types in the address: www.yourdomain.com, that name is translated into numbers (called an IP address) and the computer is then directed to that IP address which is the website. Every website on the Internet is not found by its domain name but by its IP address.
You can access a site by typing only the IP address and it will take you directly to the site. But note that not all websites have an IP address specifically assigned to them. For example, each website on this server does not use different IP addresses.
So you can see jonswebsite.com and janeswebsite.com using the same IP address. Basically what happens is that when jonswebsite.com resolves to an IP address, the person looking for jonswebsite.com arrives on the server; the server then realizes that the person is looking for jonswebsite.com and sends that page to the person who requests it.
Using multiple sites on one IP address is referred to as IP address sharing or a shared IP address. If a site has its own IP address and doesn’t share with anyone else, it’s called a unique IP address.

You can still access a site that has a unique IP address using only its IP address, but you cannot reach a site using a shared IP address by typing the IP address alone because when you enter a shared IP address, you get to the server but the server doesn’t know which site you want because you haven’t told it which domain name you want.
A common reason for having a unique IP address is that you can only use SSL encryption on a single IP address. In order for a person to transmit sensitive data over the Internet, sometimes that data must be encrypted to prevent someone from intercepting the information. You can only use this encryption (called SSL) when the website has its own IP address (unique IP). It does not work on a shared IP address.
