Sleep Study Billing Made Easy for You
Sleep study billing is not a simple job as many medical coders find it challenging due to its intricate nature. However, selecting the right codes becomes easier when similar codes are grouped together and compared based on their elements.
Miscellaneous Sleep Diagnostic Testing-
Two different miscellaneous sleep diagnostic tests are available.
The first test is:
95803 involves actigraphy testing, which includes recording, analysis, interpretation, and reporting for a minimum of 72 hours up to 14 consecutive days of recording.
For this test, patients wear an actigraph device on their wrist at home. The device records sleep and movements for three to 14 days and then, the provider analyses the data from the device to monitor if the patients are suffering from circadian rhythm disorders and sleep-disordered breathing.
The second test is:
95805 involves multiple sleep latency or maintenance of wakefulness testing, which includes recording, analysis, and interpretation of physiological measurements of sleep during multiple trials to assess sleepiness.
Multiple sleep latency testing includes four or five short nap sessions in the office, spaced a few hours apart. During these naps, the patient’s brain waves, muscle activity, and eye movements are monitored and recorded.
Home Sleep Studies
Home sleep study tests are cheaper compared to in-office or hospital sleep studies as they are conducted at the patient’s home. A special device monitors breathing, oxygen levels, and breathing effort throughout the night. Then, the provider analyzes the data extracted from the device to diagnose the exact sleep disorder.
There are three HCPCS Level II codes for reporting home sleep study tests, distinguished by the number of channels used during recording:
G0400 is for home sleep study tests with a type IV portable monitor, unattended, with at least 3 channels.
CPT® code ranges from 95806-95783 and it includes codes for all in-office/hospital sleep studies.
Polysomnography is a diagnostic test used by doctors to identify sleep disorders It gives detailed insights into a person’s sleep, covering factors like duration and quality.
During the test, sensors are attached to monitor and record:
- Brain waves
- Heart rate
- Breathing
- Eye movements
- Limb movements
- Blood oxygen levels
- Chin muscle activity
95808, 95810 and 95782 are the codes that are used for diagnosing polysomnography.
