Rottweiler Dog Breed Information
The Rottweiler, sometimes called Rottweiler Maltese, is a large breed of dog, usually considered to be medium to large-size. The dogs were originally called Rottweiler Metzgerhund (meaning Rottweiler butchering dogs), because their original purpose was to herd cattle and pull carts full of butchered meat to sell. The word “Rottweilers” comes from the German words Roott, which means cattle, and Weiler, which means hand. From these words, the name Rottweiler was born.
Rottweilers are characterized as tough, energetic dogs with powerful, muscular builds. They have medium to long hair that is either curly around the ears and muzzle, with varying amounts of mane. The body of a Rottweiler can be solidly built with a square muscular shape. The breed is sometimes referred to as the American Bandog or English Bandog and is popular in families where there is some degree of socialization and where there is a history of owning other dogs. The standard Rottweiler has a compact muscular structure, high, narrow shoulder blade, and a somewhat square chest.

The American Staffordshire Terrier, sometimes called a “biter”, is the most commonly used variety of Rottweiler in North America, although the British and Australian breeds also make up a good part of the Rottweiler’s stable. Both breeds enjoy a steady flow of good-quality temperament, and they are very intelligent and eager to please. They are relatively hardy animals, both mentally and physically, but they do need a daily dose of exercise and socialization to keep them healthy and happy. A well-socialized Rottweiler will mix easily with other dogs and possess a pleasing disposition. These dogs often enjoy family pets and are excellent with children.
The genetic disorders that affect the other Rottweiler breeds are more prevalent in the British and Australian breeds. These include hip dysplasia, cystic fibrosis, hypothyroidism, and yapping, all of which have much more serious health consequences than a dog with normal traits. Cystic fibrosis and yapping are linked to the lack of oxygen in the puppy’s blood stream, leading to breathing problems and possible death. Hip dysplasia affects the development of the hip joint, and this causes many problems in walking, not to mention the constant worry about its welfare. Hypothyroidism and yapping, though generally milder versions of dysplasia, can be fatal.
A good Rottweiler breeder will work closely with both the parents of the puppy to make sure that both have the proper traits for a good life together. They will also evaluate your puppy’s energy level. Because rottweilers are very energetic dogs, they require lots of exercise and fresh air. If your Rottweiler seems lethargic or lacks the energy level needed to be an active, healthy pet, your breeder may recommend another breed or perhaps a Rottweiler-like breed such as a Saint Bernard.

It is important to be aware that although rottweilers are known as powerful dogs and quite athletic in appearance, they are not nimble by nature and must be trained accordingly if they are to fulfill their potential as working dogs. The breed standard advises against exposing rottweilers to too much rough housing or excessive exercise because they do need to have some time to themselves, whether it is going for a walk or taking a long relaxing ride on a dog-drawn carriage. Rottweiler dogs often like to be in charge so you should establish their hierarchy from the start and provide them with enough authority over the other dogs in the household before they are fully grown
