Atrium
Until a year ago, 60 Wall Street’s atrium was a popular meeting spot for staff and business partners, a place where gossip was exchanged. It was also a hotspot for coffee meetings. Unfortunately, it’s been neglected. But the Paramount Group, which owns the building, is looking to change it. In April, it bought the building and has begun work on redeveloping the atrium into a food hall.
The original lobby, installed by JP Morgan, was not very popular with tenants. Instead, former employees continued to use the atrium for coffee meetings. The new plan for 60 Wall Street, commissioned by the Paramount Group, reimagines the space as a more serene oasis. It includes a Bolivian flake latticework and papyrus-stalk columns.
The new plans for the building include a public atrium, which will be a new addition to the Time Warner Center. But it’s unclear how the new design will impact the building’s future. The Paramount Group plans to start work on a redesign when the Deutsche Bank lease expires in 2022. If it’s approved, it will leave the building open for new tenants, and should be ready for them by mid-2023. However, the Landmarks Preservation Commission is reviewing the proposed exterior modifications.
It’s a complicated matter. The Department of City Planning is required to review any modifications before they are put into action. This will likely lead to jackhammers. But it’s unclear how long the building will be open for construction, and how long the new tenant will stay. It’s possible that 60 Wall Street will be replaced by another building, but that will depend on who the new owner is.
The original building was also home to United Shoe Machinery Corporation, a shoe manufacturer that dominated the New England market at the time. It is now a National Historic Landmark class A office tower.
