Science is a human activity that has a certain philosophy behind it. In order to understand science in depth, we need to know at least the statements of some important philosophers of science, such as Francis Bacon, Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn, Paul Feyerabend and Imre Lakatos. Against the background of this understanding, this course will discuss whether Hinduism and yoga are science, or whether they go far beyond the construct of science as it is currently understood by philosophers and laymen alike.
In this course, the student will
to understand science not from a conventional or ideological point of view, but from a philosophical and practical point of view – the way science has been understood and practiced in the Western world;
develop the ability to debate in a nuanced way whether Hinduism and yoga can be considered a science as currently understood and practiced in the Western world;
to develop an understanding of the “science” of Hinduism and Yoga from their own philosophical and cosmological perspectives and not from that of Western philosophy of science.
