Most people think that a Personal Licence and Premises Licence are one and the same thing. However, there is a big difference between the two!

Personal Licence  

  • A Personal Licence is required in order to sell alcohol

  • You must be 18 years old or over to apply for a Personal Licence

  • You will need to have a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check done in order to apply for a Personal Licence

  • Once you have been granted a ALPH Personal Licence, it is valid for 10 year.

Premises Licence  

  • Premises Licence are granted by the local authority.

  • You must be 18 years old or over to apply for a Personal Licence.

  • You will need to have a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check done in order to apply for a Personal Licence.

  • Once you have been granted a Personal Licence, it is valid for 10 years.

  • A Premises Licence is required in order to sell alcohol from a specific premises.

  • The premises must be registered with the local authority.

  • You will need to have your Personal Licence in order to apply for a Premises Licence.

  • Once you have been granted a Premises Licence, it is valid for 10 years.

So, as you can see, there is a big difference between a Personal Licence and Premises Licence! If you are wanting to sell alcohol, you will need both. Personal Licences are granted by the local authority and Premises Licences are also granted by the local authority.

Scottish Personal Licence  

There is also something called a Scottish Personal Licence. A Scottish Personal Licence is required if you want to sell alcohol in Scotland.

  • You must be 18 years old or over to apply for a Scottish Personal Licence.

  • You need to have a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check done in order to apply for a Scottish Personal Licence.

  • Once you have been granted a Scottish Personal Licence, it is valid for 10 years.
