Park Hyun-kyung (24, photo) overcame the disappointment of last year’s runner-up and became ‘Match Queen.’ Park Hyun-kyung won the Korea Ladies Professional Golf (KLPGA) Tour Doosan Match Play final held at Ladena Golf Club (par 72) in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do on the 19th, winning by 1 hole after an 18-hole match against Lee Ye-won (21).
Park Hyun-kyung lifted her trophy seven months after the SK Networks/Seoul Economy Ladies Classic in October last year, earning her fifth career win. Adding to her winning prize of 225 million won, Park Hyun-kyung also jumped to first place in the season prize money (approximately 485.23 million won) and grand prize (204 points) rankings.
Last year’s runner-up Park Hyun-kyung faced the 2022 runner-up Lee Ye-won in the final. Hyun-kyung Park took the lead by taking a 3-hole lead with 3 birdies until the 5th hole. In the second half, Lee Ye-won picked up the pace and took the lead by one hole until the 16th hole, but Park Hyun-kyung recorded a birdie on the 17th hole (par 4), and the two players entered the final 18th hole (par 5) with a tie. While Lee Ye-won missed a 3.1m birdie putt on the 18th hole, Park Hyun-kyung put a 1.7m birdie putt into the hole, and the winner of the trophy was decided.
Hyun-kyung Park said, “I think it was a God-given opportunity to advance to the finals of the match play competition for two years in a row. “Now I think I can confidently say that we are a match play powerhouse.” With this win, Park Hyun-kyung won all 7 games of this tournament, including the semifinal against Lee So-young held earlier that day, increasing her match play career win rate to 81.82% (18 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses).
Park Hyun-kyung, who won three of her five career wins in May, said, “I am so happy to win in May again this time. “I have achieved the first half of my three goals this year, so I will not rest on my laurels and prepare hard to win the major tournament and receive the grand prize,” he added.
