Olympic Paris: The IOC has approved Olympic Triathlon Qualification Criteria

Olympic Paris: The International Olympic Committee has adopted the Olympic Qualifying Requirements for the Olympic Games in Paris. The World Triathlon Executive Board had already endorsed the Criteria.

Please keep in mind that the World Triathlon will include three medal events at the Olympic Games in Paris: men’s race, women’s race, and mixed relay. The total quota will be 110 athletes. The qualification period begins on May 27, 2022, and ends on the same day in 2024.

There will be several ways to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris and gain one of the 55 seats available for each gender. As in the previous edition of the Olympic Games, there will be Mixed Relay events counting towards the qualification.
 
The host country has qualified two men and two women in one Mixed Relay. The winner of the 2022 World Triathlon Mixed Relay Championships, which will be held on June 26, 2022, in Montreal, will receive two quota slots per gender in case that country has already the spot allocated and will roll down. The same will be true for the victor of the 2023 Mixed Relay World Championships, who will receive two berths per gender.

Olympic Triathlon Qualification Criteria

The top six countries in the Mixed Relay Olympic Qualifying Ranking on March 25, 2024, will receive two men’s and two women’s quota spots. If a country has already secured its slots, the places will be given to the next highest-rated country.

Two more countries awarded 2-2 berths for finishing first in the Mixed Relay Olympic Qualifying Event, which will be held between April 15 and May 27, 2024. If a country has previously been assigned a spot, it will be ineligible to compete in this tournament. We will have secured 22 of the 55 available spots using these three approaches. The Individual Olympic Qualifying Ranking will have 26 spots available.

The top two athletes in both genders not be considered in this ranking for countries with 2-2 slots already guaranteed by any of the previous qualification processes.

Triathlon Qualification Criteria for Olympic Paris

The 26 athletes with the highest position on the World Triathlon Individual Olympic Qualifying Ranking as of May 27, 2024, assigned one quota place for their country, subject to the maximum quota allotment per NOC per event.

The top 140 places in the Individual Olympic Qualifying Ranking will be the eligibility requirement for any of the athletes for all of the above positions.

For the qualification for Paris 2024, the “new flag” rule reinstated. The countries that will be eligible for those slots are those with the best ranking position from the continent on the World Triathlon Ranking previously Points List from those who did not secure a place through any of the other methods. 
Last but not least, a maximum of 2 invitations awarded by the Tripartite Commission to countries entitled to receive such places and with eligible athletes according to the IOC criteria, which is to be in the top 180 of the World Triathlon Ranking for the last two qualification means.

Other significant characteristics are that quota slots won for countries, and it will be up to the National Olympic Committees to select athletes from among those qualified.

Countries with at least three athletes ranked in the top 30 of the Individual Olympic Qualifying Ranking will be able to qualify three athletes; other countries may earn up to two quotas per gender.

Additionally:

NOCs having two men and two women qualified, regardless of the qualification process, are eligible to enter a team in the mixed relay event.

Additionally, competing in the individual events at the Olympic Games in Paris not required to be a part of the Mixed Relay team, although the counties’ quotas will not be enhanced in this scenario. Olympic Triathlon Individual Qualification Ranking for Olympic Paris

1.1. Olympic Qualification period:

a.) Period in months: 24;

b.) 27 May 2022 through to 27 May 2024.

1.2. Total events to count:

a.) Athletes can use a total of their best twelve (12) results for their Olympic qualification:

(i) First part: 27 May 2022 to 26 May 2023: maximum six (6) results to count;

(ii) Second part: 27 May 2023 to 27 May 2024: maximum eight (8) results to count.

b.) Maximum scores can be achieved with 4 results from the first part and 8 results

from the second, or 5 results from the first, and 7 results from the second, or 6 results from the first, and 6 results from the second.

1.3. Qualification events:

a.) World Triathlon Championship Finals;

b.) World Triathlon Championship Series;

c.) World Triathlon Olympic Test Event;

d.) World Triathlon Cup;

e.) Continental Triathlon Championships:

(i) Maximum two (2) to count in the whole qualification period. If there are three (3) during the qualification period, the first two (2) will count;

(ii) Both scoring Continental Championships may happen in the same part, otherwise one will happen in the first part and the other in the second part;

(iii) Only athletes from the respective content of the Continental Triathlon

Championships will earn points;

(iv)  Only the Standard distance Continental Triathlon Championships events considered.

f.) Continental Games:

(i) Maximum one (1) to count in the whole Olympic Qualification period;

(ii) Continental Games may happen in the first part or the second part;

(iii) Only athletes from the respective content of the Continental Games will earn points;

(iv)  In the absence of Continental Games during the qualification period where triathlon is on the program or where all NOCs from the respective Continent are eligible to compete, a Continental Triathlon Sprint

Championships or another event approved by World Triathlon considered to held in the second part;

1.4. Scoring:

a.) The points earned by the best athlete for each event will be:

(i) 1250 for the World Triathlon Championship Finals;

(ii) 1000 for the World Triathlon Championship Series;

(iii) 1000 for the World Triathlon Olympic Test Event;

(iv) 500 for the World Triathlon Cup;

(v) 400 for the Continental Triathlon Championships and the Continental

Games.

b.) In the case of sprint distance events, the value will be 75% of the value of the standard distance events of the same category. In the case of semi-final /final or eliminator format events, the value will be 87, 5% of the value of the standard distance events of the same category.

c.) For the Continental Games, the points awarded as a sprint event, irrelevant to the distance of the actual competition.

d.) The points decreased by 7.5% at every position;

e.) Athletes competing under the World Triathlon flag will be considered in the continent of the National Federation they are moving to.

1.5. Cut-off:

a.) To earn points, athletes must finish within the cut-off time which determined by adding 8% to the winner’s time in both men’s and women’s events.

b.) In case of a qualifying round format or time trial qualifying round format, a maximum of 50 athletes may score points according to the World Triathlon

Competition Rules 20.6 and 21.7. The cut-off times do not apply to any scoring

Positions achieved during any of the rounds.

1.6. Quality of Field Factor:

a.) The Quality of Field Factor set annually and will affect the Continental

Triathlon Championships and the Continental Games. The factors calculated for

1.7. Top 5 Bonus:

a.) The Top 5 bonus will affect the Continental Triathlon Championships and the

Continental Games. The bonus calculated for the World Triathlon Ranking will apply.

1.8. Force Majeure adaptations:

a.) Adaptations to this Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking due to force
