‘Neymar injured’ Brazil lose 0-2 to Uruguay in World Cup qualifier

‘Messi multi-goal’ Argentina beat Peru for fourth straight win

Brazil’s national soccer team lost star striker Neymar (Alhilal) to injury in a World Cup South American qualifier to Uruguay.

Brazil fell 0-2 to Uruguay in a South American qualifier for the 2026 North and Central American World Cup at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Monday (Aug. 18).

Brazil, which drew 1-1 with underdog Venezuela on Sept. 13, failed to pick up a win in its two South American qualifiers in October.

With two wins, one draw, and one loss in four South American qualifiers (7 points), Brazil is tied for third place with Uruguay, who won today, in points and goal differential (+3), but trails in goal difference.

Uruguay has eight goals and Brazil has seven.

The South American qualifiers for the World Cup will see 10 countries play a total of 18 matches, both home and away, to determine the final standings. The top six qualify directly to the World Cup, while the seventh-place finisher faces an intercontinental playoff.

Brazil conceded a goal in the 42nd minute to Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez (Liverpool).

To make matters worse, in the final minute of the first half, Neymar went down in a contest with an opponent and was stretchered off in pain.

Brazil, who replaced Neymar with Thierry Henry (Tottenham), failed to find a way back into the game and conceded in the 32nd minute to Uruguay’s Nicolas De Lacroix (River Plate).

Argentina, winners of the Qatar 2022 World Cup and No. 1 in the FIFA rankings, beat Peru 2-0 earlier in the day.

Lionel Messi (Miami) scored twice in the win. They were his 105th and 106th goals of the tournament.

Argentina, unbeaten in four South American qualifiers, remained in first place (12 points). Peru dropped to ninth place (1 point).

Venezuela defeated Chile 3-0 to move into fourth place in South American qualifying (7 points, +3-5 goals against).

Colombia and Ecuador, who also tied 0-0, are fifth (6 points) and sixth (4 points), respectively. 19가이드03
