Macau\'s prosecutor\'s office said in a media statement on Friday that 59 defendants appeared to have received fees for illegal online betting operations that lured players to bet on football and basketball games. Macau\'s prosecutor\'s office also said servers on betting websites were hosted overseas, though it did not specify specific jurisdictions.
Macau law enforcement police said in a briefing in early July that illegal online sports betting rings had reportedly pocketed $1.08 billion ($134.2 million) in bets since 2016, including MOP72 million per share during the Euro 2024 soccer tournament, which ended earlier this month.
Nearly 8.6 million cases of cash were seized in Macau, the prosecutor\'s office said in a release on Friday.
Two of the 59 defendants are currently in pre-trial detention, while the remaining 57 are out on bail and banned from leaving the country.
