NATIONAL S’MORES DAY!
You hear the crackling of the campfire, the summer air on your skin, and the sound of nature. What better way to end the day with some crackers, chocolates, and marshmallows? For any camping trip, s’mores are must-have treats.
This treat is traditionally made by campfires as the marshmallows were toasted on direct fire. The toasty marshmallows sandwiched between crackers and chocolates make for a heavenly treat!
While s’mores are often associated with camping, they are now easily accessible at dessert shops with their own twists. The good news is that s’mores have their own celebratory day (and rightfully so), and while it has already passed (August 10), there’s always a reason to celebrate desserts. So how did s’mores come about and what are some ways to celebrate them? Read on to find out!
How it began
The origins of national s’mores day are mysterious and to this day, unknown, but it has been a long, favorite treat on American camping grounds. In the early 1920s, s’mores were first mentioned in a book of recipes published by the Campfire Marshmallows – the home to original marshmallows.
Then, s’mores were called Graham cracker sandwiches and were made popular by boy and girl scouts. Then in 1927, a recipe book called Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts was published by the Girl Scouts and called the treat, ‘some more’. Today, it is commonly known as s’mores.
Ways to celebrate S’mores Day
S’mores Day can be celebrated in so many ways and here are some favorites.
Camping
What better way to celebrate s’mores day than to go camping? The campfire is a traditional method of preparing s’mores and therefore a fun excuse to enjoy nature and celebrate s’mores day. With just crackers, chocolates, and marshmallows – brands and flavors of your choice – you can make delicious s’mores treat by the campfire. The fun thing about this is that you can toast the marshmallows to your liking.
Dessert shops
If the great outdoors isn’t for you, you can still celebrate s’mores day at dessert shops. Some dessert shops offer the experience of campfire s’mores, while some offer a dessert twist to the traditional s’mores. Either way, you can still enjoy the same ingredients of crackers or cookies, chocolate, and marshmallows.
As rolled ice cream at Rollz
Speaking of dessert shops and twists, at Rollz Ice Cream, we have our own twist of the classic s’mores – a rolled ice cream version. Using the ingredients and flavor profile of s’mores, Rollz has recreated this classic into an ice cream version. It begins with an ice cream base, poured onto a cold flat metal plate. It is mixed into a creamy mixture, flattened, and then rolled. It is then served with s’mores toppings such as chocolate, crackers, and of course marshmallows.
