Medium format landscape photography is an excellent choice for anyone wishing to get into the world of outdoor photography. While the smaller and more personal cameras made for vacationers are wonderful for getting shots around the campfire, they aren’t suited for long periods in one place. On the other hand, medium format landscape photography is perfect for getting out into the country, into the great outdoors, and capturing a series of unique scenes along the way. If you are looking to become more experienced with this type of photography, here are some tips to keep in mind.
Choose the right subject – There are various different subjects that can be used for medium format landscape photographs. Wildlife and nature photos are popular for being beautiful and being dramatic. Landscape shots can be of fields, trails, or scenery, and can provide interesting focal points for a photograph. The background and foreground should be interesting in relation to the subject, and the composition should be just the way it is when you take the actual photograph.
Look up different terms – The terms “landscape” and “medium format” are often used interchangeably. However, these aren’t exactly the same thing. A “landscape” is a nearly monochromatic image that is filled with color and has an almost photographic sense to it. On the other hand, a medium format is quite different. These are filled with color but have little to do with photography. If you’re going to look up terms like these, try to stick to what you know and what you feel is necessary for medium format photography.
Understand the format – You must know at least some of the history of medium format photography before you get started. In this day and age, digital photography has taken over the world of photography, and technology has advanced tremendously. What was true years ago about photography is no longer true. Then you can either print or send it out as an electronic file. Some cameras work with memory cards, others have hard drives that must be formatted before they will accept a picture.
Learn the tools – Many people think that medium format is a tool of the photographer. This is not true. In fact, all the tools you need to have to become a good landscape photographer are actually included in your camera. These include a shutter speed, focus area, and image stabilization. These features are especially important if you plan to take landscape photos that require you to stay in the same position for an extended period of time.
