Striker Cho Kyu-sung (Midtjylland) and midfielder Hong Hyun-seok (Hent) have been called up to the South Korean men’s national soccer team by head coach Jürgen Klinsmann.
Cho’s club, Mittwylan, defeated Nordsjælland 2-0 at home in the 15th round of the 2023-2024 Superliga at the MCH Arena in Herning, Denmark on Wednesday (July 13).
With the win, Mittwillan moved to third place with nine wins, three draws and three losses (30 points), closing in on leaders Copenhagen (33 points).
Cho Kyu-sung started for the ninth consecutive game to lead the Mittwillan offense. Despite not registering an attacking point, he caused problems for the opposition defense before being substituted for Carlos Pereira Junior in the 43rd minute.
Belgium international Hong Hyun-seok also got a lot of playing time before being called up. He played around 80 minutes until the 35th minute of the second half.
Earlier in the day, Gent tied Anderlecht 1-1 at home in the 14th round of the 2023-2024 Jupiler League at the Gelamco Arena in Ghent, Belgium. With 27 points, Gent are in third place in the league. They are seven points behind leaders Gwynion Saint-Gilles (34).
Hong Hyun-seok, who started the day in midfield for Hent, was substituted for Pieter Jerkens in the 35th minute with the teams tied 1-1. Although he didn’t create any offense, he added mobility to the team’s midfield.
With the team’s schedule complete, Cho Kyu-sung and Hong Hyun-seok will return home for the Klinsmannhoe call-up. The team will convene at a hotel in Seoul this afternoon and will hold their first training session at Mokdong Sports Complex in Seoul.
The team will then face Singapore at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Sept. 16 and China at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Center on Sept. 21. It’s Klinsmann’s first test as head coach and a crucial two-game series for South Korea as they look to qualify for their 11th consecutive World Cup. 19가이드03
